Short answerA social media editor runs a brand's social accounts — planning content, writing, publishing, replying to comments, and reporting on what worked.
The distinction that decides your salary, and it is large: "the person who posts" is paid RM2,500 and is replaceable. "The person who knows why the numbers moved" is paid RM8,000 and is not.
That is not a slightly different skill — it is a different career with the same name.
No licence, no protected title.
This is one of the easiest entry points into marketing, and that is a real advantage for a student without a related degree — but only if you plan to move past the "posting" part.

What does a Social Media Editor do?

Manages a brand's Instagram, TikTok and Facebook — the brand's voice in the digital world.

A day in the life

Social media editors run a brand's online voice: content calendars, writing & scheduling posts, replying to comments/DMs, tracking trends & virality, performance reports.
You're the brand's "face" on IG/TikTok/FB/X.
Trends move hourly — this job is fast.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: live on social media & understand why things go viral, write fast in the right tone, and take negative comments.
Less suitable if you: want to switch off after 6pm.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Social media executive ("the person who posts"): RM2,200–3,500.
Executive with paid advertising skills: RM4,000–6,500.
Social media manager: RM6,000–10,000.
Head of social / digital: RM10,000–18,000.
The gap between the first line and the second is one skill: paid advertising.

The most important number on this page
The difference between RM2,500 and RM6,000 in this field is not years of experience.
It is whether you can manage an ad budget and explain the result.
The reason is simple: publishing posts is a cost to a company. Managing an ad budget that produces sales is value, and measurable value is provable value.
Meta Blueprint and Google Ads certification are free. This is possibly the highest return on study time in the entire creative category.

Choose the industry, not only the craft
This is the most useful advice in this whole category, and almost nobody gives it.
Two people with the same skill can earn twice the difference, and what decides it is not talent — it is who is paying.
Pays low: small agencies, work for small businesses, general social media content. High competition, low client budgets.
Pays high: banks and financial services, technology companies, oil and gas, product companies, multinationals. Their budgets are larger and the cost of bad work is higher.
And highest: overseas clients paying in foreign currency — possible in creative work because the output is a file.
The most expensive mistake in this field is spending five years getting better at your craft while staying in an industry that cannot pay for it.

What AI changes
Exposed, and fast: writing captions, generating post ideas, scheduling, routine comment responses, resizing content for different platforms. Tools do all of this now.
That is precisely the "person who posts" job, and it is why that level is getting crowded and poorly paid.
Not exposed:
Deciding strategy — which audience, which platform, why.
Managing money — an ad budget involves judgement and responsibility.
Crisis — when the comments turn and the company has to respond within an hour.
Malaysian context — knowing what tone works for a Malay versus Chinese versus Indian audience, and what will offend. Tools trained on global text do not have this.
Concrete advice: use the tools for captions and ideas — they make you faster. Then build your skill on paid advertising and analytics, because that is the part that pays and the part that cannot be automated.

City vs hometown

100% remote-able; SMEs in every town need account management — local markets exist everywhere.

Study path after SPM / UEC

The distinction that decides whether this is a career or a temporary job
"The person who posts" — publishing what someone else decided, replying to comments, following a calendar. RM2,200–3,500, and easily replaced.
"The person who knows why the numbers moved" — deciding what should be published, managing ad budget, explaining results to management. RM6,000–12,000.
These are not two levels of the same career. They are two different careers with the same title, and the difference is whether you understand the numbers.

The route
SPM → run a real account for someone → diploma (optional) → social media executive → add analytics and paid advertising → manager / analyst.

Why this route is worth it despite low starting pay
It is one of the most open entry points into marketing in Malaysia.
No degree required, no registration, no examination. Employers check whether you have run a real account.
For a student without a marketing degree — or without a degree at all — that is a rare opening, and marketing is a field with a high ceiling.
But it is only worth it if you plan to move past the first stage.

The skills that double your salary
Paid advertising. This raises income the most, because you are managing company money and the result is directly measurable. Someone who can show "I spent RM10,000 and produced X" is in an entirely different position.
Analytics. Not reading a dashboard — explaining why, and proposing what next.
Writing. See copywriter; the same skill, paid more.

A misunderstanding worth correcting
Having many followers yourself does not qualify you for this job.
Running a brand account means speaking in someone else's voice, to an audience that is not yours, for a purpose you did not choose — and measuring whether it worked.
What employers want to see: an account you ran for someone else, and what changed while you ran it.

Something to understand before you start
The PDPA 2010 applies to customer data you handle, and MCMC regulates online content.
A wrong post can create legal trouble for your employer — and a social media editor who understands those boundaries is trusted with larger accounts.

Related fields
Digital marketing analyst — the next step if numbers appeal. Copywriter — the same writing skill, better paid. Marketing manager — the common destination. PR — where a social media crisis becomes a company problem.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

Marketing/communications helps; not required.

Tuition fees

Nearly zero — a phone & creativity.

Scholarships

Not applicable.

Certification & licence

The portfolio is the qualification — and that means something specific
No body licenses creative work in Malaysia. No protected title, no registration, no examination.
What exists instead is your work, and employers judge it in a very short time.
What that means in practice:
You can start building your qualification today. Unlike medicine or law, nobody stops you doing real work at sixteen.
A degree opens the first interview and not much more. After that, it is the portfolio.
Be wary of colleges selling "creative certificates". In a field with no regulator, nobody validates what that certificate is worth — and employers know it.
Three good pieces beat thirty mediocre ones. A portfolio is judged on the weakest piece in it, not the best.

Academic qualifications
A diploma / degree in Marketing, Mass Communication or Media — helpful, but not required.
This is among the few marketing roles genuinely open without a related degree, and that is an advantage worth using.

What actually gets checked
Accounts you ran for someone else — not your personal account. A school club, a family business, a small business.
Numbers. What changed while you ran it? Growth, engagement, enquiries, sales. Even small figures.
Writing samples in Malay and English, with the right tone for each.

The skills that decide pay
Meta Ads Manager / Google Ads — paid advertising management. This raises income the most, because you are managing money and the result is measurable.
Analytics — Meta Insights, TikTok Analytics, Google Analytics. Reading a dashboard is the basics; explaining why is the skill.
Free certificates: Meta Blueprint and Google Digital Garage are free and widely recognised. There is no financial reason not to take them.
Short video editing — see video editor. Short video now dominates, and an editor who can cut their own moves faster.

The law that applies
PDPA 2010 — customer data you collect through platforms.
Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 — MCMC regulates online content.
Defamation law — a brand post can get the company sued.
An editor who understands these boundaries is trusted with larger accounts, and one who does not is a risk to their employer.

Pros

Cons

Future & the AI era

AI generates posts & captions — "post-schedulers" are at risk.
Brand tone, real-time trend reactions & community interaction stay human.
One person + AI now runs accounts that once needed teams.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — languages, and this is not about your follower countSPM
Malay and English — Malaysian brands post in both, and the right tone for each differs.
A common misunderstanding: students assume having many followers themselves qualifies them. It does not. Running a brand account is an entirely different job from being popular.
What actually trains you: run the account for a school club, a family business, or a small business in your area. Work for someone else, with a purpose, and with numbers to show.
  2. The most open entry point in marketing入行
This field accepts people without a marketing degree, and that is rare.
A diploma in marketing, communications or media helps, but employers check whether you have run a real account — not where you studied.
That makes it one of the most practical ways into marketing for students who chose another field, or who did not go to university.
But be careful: an easy entry point means plenty of people enter, and that is why the bottom of this field pays poorly.
  3. Moving past "the person who posts"关键
This is the most important part of this page.
Publishing a post is a task. Knowing what should be published, and why the numbers moved, is a career.
What you need to learn to move:
Analytics — not just reading a dashboard, but explaining why something worked and proposing what to do next.
Content strategy — planning three months, not three posts.
Paid advertising — this raises pay the most, because it involves spending company money and is measurable.
Community and crisis management — what happens when the comments turn bad.
  4. Where it leads之后
This is not a destination; it is a door.
Digital marketing analyst — if the numbers appeal.
    Marketing manager — broader strategy.
Influencer manager — if the relationships appeal.
Public relations — because a crisis now starts on social media, and someone who understands the platforms is valuable in PR.
Concrete advice: come in through social media if it is the route available to you, but plan the next step from your first year.

Questions students actually ask

I have many followers — is that enough to get this job?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding in this field.
The reason: being popular and running a brand account are two different skills.
Your personal account: your voice, your audience, your purpose.
A brand account: someone else's voice, an audience that is not yours, a purpose you did not choose — and someone will ask whether it worked.
What employers actually want to see:
An account you ran for someone else. A school club, a family business, the shop next door. It does not have to be large.
What changed while you ran it. Followers, engagement, enquiries, sales — even small figures. Numbers are the language of this field.
Evidence you can write in Malay and English with the right tone for each.
And here is the advice that saves you the most time:
Take Meta Blueprint and Google Digital Garage — both free and widely recognised.
Then learn paid advertising. The difference between RM2,500 and RM6,000 in this career is not years of experience — it is whether you can manage an ad budget and explain the result. That is one skill, it is free to learn, and it doubles your salary.
