Two things must be said at once about this field in Malaysia.
First: Malaysia has world-class archaeological sites and very few archaeologists. Lenggong Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bujang Valley carries evidence of early trade, and Sarawak's caves hold a long record of human occupation. The material is there. The people studying it are not enough.
Second, and this needs to be known before choosing: the work that actually pays in archaeology is not digging for discovery — it is heritage compliance work.
The National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645) protects heritage sites and objects, and development touching a site or turning up material must deal with the Department of National Heritage. That is where the continuous paid work is — not in discovery expeditions.

Salary range
Heritage officer / museum officer (public service): on the public service scheme — structured pay, fixed increments, and a pension. The most stable route in this field.
Compliance and heritage impact assessment work: RM3,500–8,000 — and this is the most continuous part because it is driven by development, not grants.
Museum curator and conservator: RM3,000–7,000; state and private museums differ.
Heritage site management: RM3,500–8,000.
Heritage tourism and content development: variable; a frequently forgotten route that uses the same knowledge.
University lecturer: requires a PhD; academic scheme.
Seasonal / contract fieldwork: unstable, and not a foundation for a full career.

Heritage compliance work is continuous because development is continuous.
Research depends on grants; compliance depends on law. The National Heritage Act 2005 does not stop because budgets tighten.
Students who understand this difference plan careers that last. Those who do not often leave the field within a few years.

The honest part
This field is small, and the number of permanent posts is limited.
Fieldwork is hot, humid and remote, and most of the time is actually spent on post-excavation analysis, not digging.
Pay is lower than other sciences at the same education level.
What balances it: build GIS, data handling and heritage law knowledge — all three make you employable inside this field, and GIS and data make you employable outside it too.
That is not retreating. That is how people survive in a small field.

A research degree should be paid for by someone else.
How it gets funded:
Scholarships — government, university, agency and foundation.
Graduate research assistantships — you are paid an allowance to work on your supervisor's grant while your degree runs.
Supervisor grant money — if a supervisor holds an active research grant, it often includes student funding.
Industry sponsorship — for applied research tied to a company.
Why this matters: a PhD takes three to five years. Paying for it yourself means three to five years without income plus fees, and the financial return rarely justifies that.
Questions to ask before accepting a place:
Does this supervisor hold an active grant?
Does this place come with a scholarship or allowance?
How many of their students finish, and where do they go?
The right supervisor matters more than the right university, and students are rarely told that.

What AI changes
Exposed: initial artefact classification, pattern matching, record transcription, and image processing — and this field already uses 3D scanning, photogrammetry and image analysis extensively.
The larger effect is actually positive: remote sensing and LiDAR have found sites invisible from the ground, and that expands this field rather than shrinking it.
What it does not do:
Excavate. Excavation destroys the site, and the decision about where and how to dig is judgement that cannot be handed over.
Interpret context — what the material means about the people who left it.
Make conservation decisions.
Negotiate between developers, communities and authoritiesand that is a large part of real heritage work.

If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
