Second, and this is the part students do not expect:

When a dam, a highway, a plantation or a quarry is proposed, the environmental impact assessment requires someone to go to the site and record what plants are thereincluding whether there are threatened species.
That is paid consultancy work, it is continuous, and it is the part of the market that needs botanists most.
So this route has two legs: the research leg and the consultancy legand most careers use both.

A day in the life

Forest botanists study Malaysia's green treasure — among the world's oldest rainforests (130 million years!): species surveys & identification, field expeditions (Taman Negara, Borneo!), herbaria & taxonomy, impact assessments (EIA), endangered species conservation.
Malaysia is megadiverse: 15,000+ plant species — genuine discovery work.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: love forests & trek for days (leeches!), hold scientific rigour, endure long observation work, and accept moderate pay for passion.
Less suitable if you: want fast high pay or can't take the field.

Salary range
Research assistant / botanical assistant: RM2,200–3,500
Science officer / botanist (government): on the public service scheme — structured pay, allowances, and pension or EPF.
Environmental consultant (botany): RM3,500–7,000, higher with expertise in a particular group.
Researcher / herbarium curator: RM4,000–8,000
Senior researcher / programme head: RM8,000–14,000
University lecturer: requires a PhD.
Fieldwork usually carries additional allowances.

The honest part
This is not a high-paying field, and a student choosing it for money will be disappointed.
But it has two rare things:
A skill that cannot be mass-producedand that means long-term job security.
And work that matterswhat is recorded and what is not recorded decides what survives.
The route to better income: expertise in a particular group, further qualifications, and combining a permanent post with consultancy.

What AI changes
Exposed: preliminary identification from photographs, specimen database management, distribution mapping, and report drafts. Plant identification apps already exist and are improving.
And the real effect is mixed, but useful:
Identification tools help for common species and fail on the difficult onesand the difficult ones are the ones that matter most, because those are the ones that may be new or threatened.
What becomes more valuable:
Expert confirmationsomebody must verify, and that signature carries legal weight in an EIA report.
Fieldworkno model can walk into a forest and collect a specimen.
Finding and describing new species.
Judgement when a specimen does not fit any existing description.
And responsibilitysomebody must be accountable for what the report says.
Conclusion: tools make data collection faster, which means more surveys can be donebut the expert eye for the difficult cases becomes rarer and more valuable, not less.

The ethical part, honestly
EIA survey is sometimes uncomfortableyou are recording what is on a site that may be cleared.
But an honest, thorough record is the only thing that can protect that site, and a botanist who signs off a survey that was not done causes real damage.

What can start now, at fifteen
Accurate observation and orderly records.
Photograph plants; note where, when, what soil, under canopy or open; try to name them; keep your list.
Taxonomy is not memorisation — it is training the eye to see small consistent differences, and that eye takes years.
Someone who starts observing at fifteen has a ten-year advantage.

If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

    Biologythe absolute foundation; plant structure, reproduction, classification, ecology.
    Chemistryspecimen preservation, and plant chemistry if you head towards natural products and medicines.
    Mathematicsecology is sampling and statistics; you cannot count what is in a forest without understanding sampling.
    Englishthe entire taxonomic literature, and scientific names are Latin.
    Geography if offered — soil, climate, distribution.
    And the most important skill in this field, which can start at fifteen:

    Why that is good news:
    The number of people in Malaysia who can do it for a given plant group is small, and some of them are approaching retirement.
    Expertise that cannot be learned quickly and cannot be mass-produced is expertise with lasting value.
    Specific advice:
    Choose a group. Orchids, ferns, dipterocarp trees, fungi, seaweeds, medicinal plants.
    Being the person called for that group is worth more than knowing a little about everything.
