What can a chemistry degree do besides laboratory work?
More than students expect — and the best-paying lines are not bench work.
Where chemistry graduates actually start: QA/QC and testing laboratories absorb the largest share. That needs to be known before enrolling, not in the final year — because actual research requires a master's or PhD.
Where to move after that, and this is the useful part:
Quality assurance / GMP — RM5,000–9,000. Quality systems knowledge (ISO/IEC 17025 for laboratories, GMP for pharmaceuticals) is what takes you here, and it is a qualification valuable in itself.
Regulatory — RM5,000–10,000. NPRA for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, chemical registration, food safety.
Technical sales and applications — RM5,000–10,000 plus commission and often a company car. You sell instruments, reagents and industrial chemicals, and it requires your chemistry degree because you must solve customers' technical problems. Almost no chemistry students consider it, and that is the opportunity.
Formulation R&D — cosmetics, personal care, coatings, food. The closest thing to research without a PhD.
The skill that opens all of them: analytical instrumentation — HPLC, GC-MS, spectroscopy and method validation. Before choosing a university, ask how much real laboratory time with real instruments, and check whether the programme is IKM-accredited — the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry was established under the Chemists Act 1975 and accredits chemistry programmes.
And the most neglected Malaysian specialism: palm oil chemistry and oleochemicals. It is Malaysia's largest research industry, and chemistry students rarely consider it.
