What to notice in that list
The highest lines are not bench work.
Quality assurance, regulatory, and technical sales all pay more than running tests, and all of them require your chemistry degree.
The practical conclusion: start in the laboratory to build technical skill, then move towards quality systems, compliance or commercial.
Chemists who stay at the bench for ten years without adding one of those find their pay flattens, and that is a pattern you can avoid by seeing it early.

Do not self-fund a PhD — and this is the most important financial advice in science
A research degree should be paid for by someone else.
How it gets funded:
Scholarships — government, university, agency and foundation.
Graduate research assistantships — you are paid an allowance to work on your supervisor's grant while your degree runs.
Supervisor grant money — if a supervisor holds an active research grant, it often includes student funding.
Industry sponsorship — for applied research tied to a company.
Why this matters: a PhD takes three to five years. Paying for it yourself means three to five years without income plus fees, and the financial return rarely justifies that.
Questions to ask before accepting a place:
Does this supervisor hold an active grant?

The right supervisor matters more than the right university, and students are rarely told that.

What AI and automation change
Exposed, and this is real: routine and repetitive analysis, sample handling, calculation, report generation, and literature searching. Automated laboratories and automatic sample handling systems exist and are growing, and they reduce junior analyst work.
Not exposed:
Troubleshooting. When a result makes no sense, someone has to know whether it is the sample, the method, the instrument, or the material itself. This is the most valuable skill in laboratory work.
Method validation. Developing and proving that a test method works is professional judgement.
Responsibility. A test result confirming a product is safe is signed by someone.
Physical laboratory work and instrument maintenance.
Formulation — creating a new product is experimental work.
Honest assessment: routine analyst roles are moderately exposed; troubleshooting, quality, regulatory and formulation roles are not.
The advice that follows: do not aim to be the person who runs the test. Aim to be the person who knows why the test gave a strange answer — because that is the part that is not automated.

But here is why chemistry is better than most pure sciences
Chemistry is among the most employable pure-science degrees in Malaysia.
Every food, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, cosmetics, palm oil, rubber and electronics factory needs someone who can analyse material and confirm it meets specification.
That is broad and continuing demand, and it does not depend on one industry.

The route
Science stream SPM → a Chemistry degree (check MQA and IKM accreditation) → QA/QC, testing laboratory, or regulatory → specialise → laboratory supervision, quality assurance, or a master's/PhD for research.

The skill that most directly decides your first job
Analytical instrumentation.
HPLC, GC, GC-MS, spectroscopy, AAS, and method validation.
Before choosing a university, ask how much real laboratory time with real instruments students get, and which instruments.
Programmes that teach instrumentation mainly in theory produce graduates who cannot work on day one, and employers know the difference.

The route almost no chemistry student considers
Technical sales and applications.
Selling laboratory instruments, reagents and industrial chemicals to factories and labs.
It requires your chemistry degree — you must understand what you are selling and solve customers' technical problems.
It pays more than lab work, often with commission and a company car, and it is one of the best exit routes from junior laboratory work.

The map a student should see before choosing a specialisation
Malaysian science funding follows Malaysian industry. A science aligned to one of these has a career behind it:
Palm oil and rubberMPOB, the Rubber Board, large plantation companies, downstream research. This is Malaysia's largest research industry and it is rarely mentioned to science students.
Semiconductors and materials — Penang, Kulim. Materials science, chemistry, physics.
Agriculture and foodMARDI, the food industry, food safety.
Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals — production, testing, compliance.
Energy — oil and gas, and now renewables.
Environment — the Department of Environment, consultancies, industrial monitoring. Growing, because regulation is increasing.
Forestry and biodiversityFRIM, national parks, conservation.
Public health — diagnostic laboratories, disease surveillance.
Practical advice: choose your final year project, industrial training and postgraduate topic to touch one of these. A pure science that connects to no Malaysian industry is a harder route, and it is better to choose it knowingly than to discover it later.

The most neglected Malaysian specialism
Palm oil chemistry and oleochemicals.
This is Malaysia's largest research industry, with MPOB and a large downstream sector.
It is rarely mentioned to chemistry students, who picture pharmaceuticals or petrochemicals — and that means lower competition in a larger field.

The part you must take seriously
Chemical safety.
Hazardous substance handling, classification and labelling, ventilation, PPE, and disposal.
Workplace chemical safety regulations apply, and laboratories have specific requirements.
Chemists who take safety seriously are trusted with more important work, and those who do not eventually injure someone or destroy something expensive.

If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.
