Short answerAn illustrator produces drawn images for a specific purpose — children's books, packaging, editorial, games, character concepts, storyboards.
This page will be honest, because this field is more exposed to image generation than any other career on this site. Generic illustration work — decorative images, icons, general backgrounds — can now be generated in seconds.
That is true, and it is not reversing.
What still gets paid: a style recognisable as yours, work requiring character consistency across dozens of pages, storyboards requiring narrative understanding, and clients who want you specifically.
No licence. The portfolio is the qualification.

What does a Illustrator / Comic Artist do?

Draws for books, brands and comics — social media lets Malaysian artists sell worldwide.

A day in the life

Illustrators draw for communication: children's books, comics (webtoons!), book covers, editorial, game assets, merchandise.
Mostly freelance/project-based — multiple clients at once.
Webtoons & digital comics open new markets for Malaysian artists.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: draw daily without being told, have a distinct style, and self-discipline to deadlines.
Less suitable if you: need a fixed salary now.

Salary & career ladder

Income range
Junior illustrator (in-house / studio): RM2,000–3,200.
Illustrator (3–5 years): RM3,200–6,000.
Concept / game art: RM5,000–12,000 — this is the part of the field that pays best consistently.
Freelance: per project, and highly variable. Children's books, packaging and brand work pay better than editorial or social media work.

Choose the industry, not only the craft
This is the most useful advice in this whole category, and almost nobody gives it.
Two people with the same skill can earn twice the difference, and what decides it is not talent — it is who is paying.
Pays low: small agencies, work for small businesses, general social media content. High competition, low client budgets.
Pays high: banks and financial services, technology companies, oil and gas, product companies, multinationals. Their budgets are larger and the cost of bad work is higher.
And highest: overseas clients paying in foreign currency — possible in creative work because the output is a file.
The most expensive mistake in this field is spending five years getting better at your craft while staying in an industry that cannot pay for it.

What AI changes — the most honest section on this site
Taken, and it is not reversing: decorative illustration, stock images, icons, generic backgrounds, "anyone's style" work. This was the entry-level work that used to train young illustrators, and the bottom rung of this ladder has largely gone.
Students deserve to know this before paying college fees.
Not taken:
A style specifically yours, because clients come looking for you.
Character consistency across length — 32 pages of a children's book with the same believable character.
Storyboards — requiring narrative understanding, not just images.
Accountability — someone who can take notes, make revisions, and sign over rights.
And something running the other way, though smaller: as generated images become common, some brands specifically want work that is visibly human-made — because it signals effort and authenticity.

The most practical advice
Do not compete where the tools are strong. Do not build a portfolio full of generic beautiful images.
Build a style, and build toward one field — children's books, storyboards, concept art, packaging.
And know that your skills transfer to design, animation and UX/UI, which have larger markets. Knowing that makes pursuing illustration a reasonable decision rather than a gamble.

Study path after SPM / UEC

This page will tell the truth, even though it is not comfortable
Illustration is the career most exposed to AI on this entire site.
Generic illustration work — decorative images, icons, backgrounds, stock pictures — is now generated in seconds, and that work was the entry-level work that used to train young illustrators.
Anyone telling you otherwise is selling a course.

But this is not a page telling you to stop
It is a page telling you where the work that still pays is, so you build toward that rather than toward the part that has already gone.

What still gets paid, and why
A style recognisable as yours. The client who wants that style comes looking for you specifically. That is real protection, and it is the only one that lasts.
Consistency across length. A children's book needs the same character, believably, across 32 pages. That is an entirely different problem from producing one beautiful image.
Storyboards. They require understanding camera, timing and story. The drawing is only how you communicate it.
Work that needs someone accountable. A publisher needs a person who can take revisions, understand notes, and sign over rights.

The route
SPM → draw daily, for free → art diploma (optional) → a portfolio specific to one field → clients → freelance or in-house.

The most important financial advice on this page
Do not take on large debt for art college.
The illustration market is smaller than brochures suggest, and early income is uncertain. A large loan against a field like that is a combination that ruins people.
If you take a programme, take one you can afford, and judge it with one question: show me last year's graduate portfolios.

The sideways routes you should know exist
Plenty of illustrators move into graphic design, animation, UX/UI or games — fields using the same visual skill but with larger markets and higher pay.
That is not a failure. Fundamental drawing skill transfers well, and knowing those options exist makes the decision to pursue illustration less risky.

Related fields
Animator — the same drawing plus movement, larger market. Graphic designer — more work, steadier pay. Game designer — concept art. UX/UI designer — where visual skill is best paid.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

The One Academy, Dasein, ASWARA; self-taught is fully legitimate.

Tuition fees

Art colleges RM40,000–RM80,000; self-taught: a RM1,000–RM3,000 drawing tablet.

Scholarships

PTPTN for colleges.

Certification & licence

The portfolio is the qualification — and that means something specific
No body licenses creative work in Malaysia. No protected title, no registration, no examination.
What exists instead is your work, and employers judge it in a very short time.
What that means in practice:
You can start building your qualification today. Unlike medicine or law, nobody stops you doing real work at sixteen.
A degree opens the first interview and not much more. After that, it is the portfolio.
Be wary of colleges selling "creative certificates". In a field with no regulator, nobody validates what that certificate is worth — and employers know it.
Three good pieces beat thirty mediocre ones. A portfolio is judged on the weakest piece in it, not the best.

Academic qualifications
A Fine Art, Illustration, or Design diploma. Not required, and its real value is not the certificate — it is repeated critique and daily discipline.
Check MQA accreditation, and ask to see last year's graduate portfolios before paying.
Financial advice: take a programme you can afford without a large loan. This is not a field to go into debt for.

Software
Krita — free and complete. Start here.
Procreate — iPad, cheap, the standard for many illustrators.
Photoshop / Clip Studio Paint — industry standard.
AI tools — a difficult corner in this field. Plenty of illustrators refuse them for reasonable cause. Practically: understanding what the tools can and cannot do helps you position yourself, even if you never use them in final work.

The fundamentals no tool replaces
Anatomy, perspective, value, composition. These teach you to see, and seeing is the skill behind style.
Draw from life. Drawing from other people's pictures teaches you their style; drawing from life teaches you to draw.

Copyright — and this is a business skill, not a footnote
Who owns an illustration after it is paid for? For how long? For what use?
Young illustrators frequently sign away full rights without realising, then see their work used somewhere they did not agree to.
A written contract stating scope of use and duration is real protection, and its absence is the most common source of regret in this field.

Pros

Cons

Future & the AI era

Honestly: AI art hits the generic commission market hard.
What survives: a recognisable personal style, IP & storytelling (comics!), and fan relationships.
Many illustrators now use AI for backgrounds/drafts — speed up, identity intact.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — and draw every daySPM
Art helps but is not required. No science stream needed.
What genuinely matters: fundamental drawing — anatomy, perspective, value. These are the foundations no software or tool replaces, because they teach you to see.
Start now, for free: Krita is free. Paper is free. Draw from life, not only from other people's pictures — that is the difference between learning to draw and learning someone else's style.
  2. Art diploma — or not2–4 tahun
A Fine Art, Illustration, or Graphic Design diploma.
The real value of a good programme here is not the certificate — it is repeated critique and the discipline of drawing daily, which is hard to sustain alone.
Check MQA accreditation, and ask to see last year's graduate portfolios.
But do not take on large debt for this. The market for illustration is smaller than colleges suggest, and a large loan in a field with uncertain income is a hard combination.
  3. Style — the only real protection关键
This is the most important part of this page.
Generic illustration can be generated. A style recognisable as yours cannot be requested from a machine, because the client who wants that style comes looking for you.
How it is built: not by picking a style, but by drawing so much that your hand becomes consistent. It takes years, and there is no short cut.
The common mistake: students imitate a popular style because it gets attention online. That puts you in direct competition with a tool that can produce that style instantly.
  4. Where the work that still pays is之后
Children's books — require a consistent character across 32 pages, and publishers want one hand behind it.
Storyboards — for ads and film. Requires narrative and camera understanding, not just drawing. See film director.
Game concept art — see game designer.
Editorial illustration — newspapers and magazines, though this market shrinks with that industry.
Packaging and brand — brands that want to look hand-made rather than generated. This is a field that is interesting because generation tools exist.

Questions students actually ask

AI can draw now — do illustrators still have a future?
The honest answer has two parts, and the first is not comfortable.
Yes, a large part of this field has been taken. Decorative illustration, stock images, icons, generic backgrounds — that work is now generated in seconds. And it was the entry-level work that used to train young illustrators, so the bottom rung of this ladder has gone.
Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
The second part, and this is what you can use:
The tools can generate a style. They cannot be you. The client who wants your particular style comes looking for you specifically — and that is the only protection that lasts.
Consistency across length. A 32-page children's book with the same believable character is an entirely different problem from one beautiful image.
Storyboards require understanding story and camera.
Someone has to be accountable — take notes, make revisions, sign over rights.
What to do about it:
1. Build the fundamentals — anatomy, perspective, value. These teach you to see, and seeing is the foundation of style.
2. Build your own style, not an imitation of a popular one. Imitating puts you in direct competition with the tools.
3. Specialise in a field that still pays — children's books, storyboards, concept art.
4. Do not take on large debt for art college. This is the most important financial advice on this page.
5. Know your skills transfer to design, animation and UX/UI — larger markets and higher pay.
