Malaysia is a mobile-first market. Most people here reach the internet through a phone rather than a computer, so companies build the app before they build the site. That means local demand for this skill is real, not imported from an overseas trend.
No licence, no protected title.
Two routes: native (Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android — best performance) or cross-platform (Flutter, React Native — one codebase for both, and the most asked-for by Malaysian companies working to a limited budget).

Salary & career ladder

Junior: RM3,500–5,500.
Mid: RM6,000–11,000.
Senior: RM11,000–18,000.
Mobile lead: RM16,000–26,000.
iOS developers are often paid slightly more than Android in Malaysia, because supply is smaller — the cost of a Mac and the annual fee filter some people out before they start.

An advantage that does not exist in most other careers
Software work can be done from anywhere. A developer in Malaysia working remotely for a Singapore or American company is paid in SGD or USD while paying rent in ringgit.
The difference is large — large enough that it changes the whole arithmetic of this career, and it does not exist for a doctor, a lawyer or a civil engineer, whose licences are tied to a country.
But it is conditional on two things, and both can be built starting from SPM:
English at a real working level — not merely a pass, but enough to argue about system design in a meeting.
Work you can show — GitHub, projects that run, real contributions. Companies hiring remotely cannot interview you the usual way, so they lean on what they can see.
Students who build both while studying end up in an entirely different salary market from classmates who only collected certificates.

What AI changes
Exposed: standard UI screens, boilerplate, routine API wiring.
Not exposed: performance on cheap devices and slow networks — which is the reality for a large share of Malaysian users — offline state handling, and debugging crashes that only happen on one phone model.
Something worth noticing: mobile work has one protection web work lacks — real device constraints. An app has to run on limited battery, memory and network, across hundreds of different phone models. That is the kind of problem that needs a person holding a phone and watching it fail.

City vs hometown

Same as web: offices in KL/Penang, but fully remote is possible.
Regional super-apps (Grab, Shopee) actively hire Malaysian mobile devs.

Study path after SPM / UEC

This is a mobile-first market. Most people here use the internet through a phone, not a computer.
The consequence is that Malaysian companies — banks, retailers, delivery firms, government — build the app before they build the site. Local demand for this skill is real and does not depend on an overseas trend.

The route
SPM (English) → IT diploma / degree → pick one framework → ship a real app to a store → junior developer → senior.

Native or cross-platform
Cross-platform (Flutter / React Native) — one codebase for iOS and Android. This is what gets hired most in Malaysia, because most companies here cannot afford two teams.
Native (Swift / Kotlin) — best performance and full access to device features. Needed for heavy apps, and paid more when it is needed.
Recommendation for a Malaysian student: start with Flutter. It gives you both platforms at once, which means you can ship something real sooner.

What separates your application
Not how many tutorials you finished. One app that is on a store, with real users, even fifty of them.

Related fields
Web developer — strongly overlapping skills, particularly through React Native. UX/UI designer — mobile design is a discipline of its own. Software engineer for broader scope. Game designer if mobile games are what appeal.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

APU, MMU, UM, USM, UTM, Sunway (CS/SE).
Online courses (Udemy, official Flutter/Apple docs) top anyone up.

Tuition fees

Same as web.
Small extras: Apple developer account USD99/yr, Google USD25 one-off.

Scholarships

Same as web (JPA/MARA/PTPTN; bootcamp ISAs).

Certification & licence

No licence. None at all.
Unlike a Civil Engineer (BEM), an Accountant (MIA) or a Doctor (MMC), no body in Malaysia licenses software work. No register, no protected title, nobody who can stop you working.
What that means in practice:
A portfolio beats a certificate. Employers check the code you wrote, not the paper you bought. This is genuinely different from licensed professions, where the paper <i>is</i> the permission to work.
Be wary of an "IT diploma" sold as a shortcut. In a field with no regulator, nobody validates what that certificate is worth — and employers know it.
Bootcamps can work, but not because of the certificate — because they force you to build something. If it does not produce showable projects, it produces nothing.

Usual qualifications
A diploma or degree in Computer Science / Software Engineering / IT.

Certificates in this field
Google issues an Associate Android Developer credential, and various Flutter certificates exist. Honestly, they are rarely checked.
What gets checked is your app.

The real cost to plan for
A Google Play developer account — a one-off fee, around USD25.
An Apple Developer account — around USD99 per year, and you need a Mac to build iOS apps.
That is a genuine barrier for a student, and it deserves stating rather than skipping: start with Android. It is cheaper, it runs on an ordinary computer, and it is the majority platform in Malaysia. Add iOS when you can afford it.

What replaces certificates
An app that is on a store, with real downloads and real reviews. That is evidence which cannot be faked.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — English, MathsSPM
    Same as web development: English is what genuinely matters, Maths helps.
    The specific advantage here: you already own the test device. The first app you build can be installed on your own phone the same day.
  2. IT diploma or degree2–4 tahun
    Computer Science, Software Engineering or Information Technology.
    As with the whole category, no route is required by law — but a degree opens the first interview and overseas work visas.
  3. Pick one route, not threePilihan
    Flutter (the Dart language) — one codebase, both platforms. The most asked-for by small and mid-sized Malaysian companies.
    React Native — the same, and useful if you already know JavaScript from web work.
    Native (Swift / Kotlin) — best performance and access to device features. Needed for heavy apps: camera, live maps, games.
    Advice: students often try to learn all three and finish nothing. One learned well enough to ship a real app beats three learned halfway.
  4. Ship to a store — this is the differentiatorKunci
    One app genuinely on the Play Store is worth more than ten that stopped at the emulator.
    The reason: shipping means you have been through store review, signing, permissions, a privacy policy, and the fixes that arrive after real users touch it. That is the whole of the job employers actually want evidence of.
    A student who can say "this app is on the Play Store, download it here" is in a completely different position from one showing screenshots.

Questions students actually ask

Flutter, React Native or native — which to start with?
Start with Flutter, if you are starting from zero.
The reason is concrete, not taste: one codebase gives you iOS and Android at once, so you can ship a real app sooner — and shipping is the whole game in this field. It is also the most asked-for by small and mid-sized Malaysian companies, because they cannot afford two teams.
React Native makes more sense if you already know JavaScript from web work — you reuse what you have.
Native (Swift / Kotlin) is for later, once you know what kind of app you want to build. It is needed for heavy work — camera, live maps, games — and paid more when it is.
The mistake to avoid: students often try all three, finish a tutorial in each, and never ship anything. One framework and one finished app on a store is worth more than shallow knowledge of three.
Do I need to buy a Mac to build apps?
For Android — no. An ordinary Windows or Linux computer is enough, and a Google Play developer account is a one-off fee of around USD25.
For iOS — yes, in practice. Building and shipping iOS apps requires a Mac, and an Apple Developer account costs around USD99 a year, ongoing.
That is a genuine financial barrier, and there is no use pretending otherwise.
What to do about it:
Start entirely with Android. It is cheaper, it runs on the computer you probably already have, and it is the majority platform in Malaysia — so your Android app reaches more local users anyway.
Learn Flutter, so your code is already ready for iOS the day you can afford to add it.
Add iOS later — after you are working, or when an employer provides the Mac, which is common.
You do not have to solve this at 17. You have to not let it stop you starting.
