Short answerA data engineer builds the systems that move data from where it is generated to where it can be used — reliably, every day, at scale.
This is the least known and most hired data role. Students hear about data science; companies actually hire data engineers, because no model works if the data does not arrive.
No licence.
The real work: data pipelines, warehouses, Python, SQL, and cloud platforms. It is software engineering applied to data.
An advantage worth knowing: this post is often paid more than a data scientist's, with lower entry requirements — no master's needed.

What does a Data Engineer do?

Builds data pipelines that let companies collect and process data at scale.

A day in the life

Data engineers build the data "plumbing": systems that reliably flow data from hundreds of sources into warehouses.
A typical day: building/fixing pipelines (Airflow, Spark), optimising queries, guarding data quality, supporting analytics teams.
When a pipeline breaks at 3am — you get the call.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: love building robust systems, obsess over reliability, and prefer infrastructure to presentations.
Less suitable if you: want work management "sees" daily.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Junior: RM4,500–7,000.
Mid (3–5 years): RM8,000–14,000.
Senior: RM14,000–22,000.
Data architect: RM22,000–38,000.

Compare it with its neighbours
Often paid more than a data scientist at the same level, with lower entry requirements and no master's.
That is a comparison rarely put to students, and it deserves making.

An advantage that does not exist in most other careers
Software work can be done from anywhere. A developer in Malaysia working remotely for a Singapore or American company is paid in SGD or USD while paying rent in ringgit.
The difference is large — large enough that it changes the whole arithmetic of this career, and it does not exist for a doctor, a lawyer or a civil engineer, whose licences are tied to a country.
But it is conditional on two things, and both can be built starting from SPM:
English at a real working level — not merely a pass, but enough to argue about system design in a meeting.
Work you can show — GitHub, projects that run, real contributions. Companies hiring remotely cannot interview you the usual way, so they lean on what they can see.
Students who build both while studying end up in an entirely different salary market from classmates who only collected certificates.

What AI changes
Exposed: writing routine transformation scripts, pipeline boilerplate, standard SQL queries.
Not exposed, and rising in value: designing systems that do not fail, deciding how data should be structured, handling a 3am failure, and working out where the bad data came from.
Something running the other way: every AI system needs clean, reliable data to be trained and run on. The surge in AI use has increased demand for the people who can build those pipelines.
This is one of the few careers on this list where AI is a demand driver rather than a threat.

Study path after SPM / UEC

Every student interested in data hears about data science. Almost nobody mentions data engineering.
But companies hire more data engineers than data scientists, because the order runs that way: the data has to arrive, clean and reliable, before anyone can analyse or model it.
And it pays more than data science at most levels, with lower entry requirements. No master's. No statistical depth. Software engineering applied to data.

The route
SPM (Maths, English) → Computer Science / IT degree → SQL and Python → one cloud platform → junior data engineer → senior → data architect.

Why this suits Malaysian students specifically
The work is pure engineering, which means it can be proven through a portfolio — and it can be done remotely. That combination opens the Singapore and international markets in a way licensed roles cannot.

What sets you apart
Cloud certificates. This is one of the few corners of IT where a certificate genuinely moves salary, because it verifies skill on a platform companies actually pay to use.
A pipeline you built yourself, however small — take public data, clean it, load it, schedule it. That shows you understand the whole shape of the work.

Related fields
Data analyst and data scientist — you build what they use. Cloud engineer — strongly overlapping, and a common sideways move. DevOps — the same philosophy and tools. Software engineer — the same foundations.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

A CS/SE degree at UM, USM, UTM, APU, MMU; then self-built cloud/pipeline skills.
Official cloud certs are this field's "currency".

Tuition fees

Degree costs like regular CS.
Cloud certs: USD100–300 each — excellent returns.

Scholarships

JPA/MARA/Khazanah; AWS/Google community programmes occasionally give free exam vouchers.

Certification & licence

No licence. None at all.
Unlike a Civil Engineer (BEM), an Accountant (MIA) or a Doctor (MMC), no body in Malaysia licenses software work. No register, no protected title, nobody who can stop you working.
What that means in practice:
A portfolio beats a certificate. Employers check the code you wrote, not the paper you bought. This is genuinely different from licensed professions, where the paper <i>is</i> the permission to work.
Be wary of an "IT diploma" sold as a shortcut. In a field with no regulator, nobody validates what that certificate is worth — and employers know it.
Bootcamps can work, but not because of the certificate — because they force you to build something. If it does not produce showable projects, it produces nothing.

But this is the corner of IT where certificates GENUINELY work
Cloud certificates get checked, and they move salary. The reason is specific: they verify skill on a particular platform an employer already pays to use, and the exams are hard to pass without real ability.

Certificates worth having
AWS Certified Data Engineer — AWS is the most widespread cloud platform in Malaysia.
Google Professional Data Engineer — respected, particularly among companies using BigQuery.
Azure Data Engineer Associate — useful in large companies and the government sector, which lean Microsoft.
Databricks / Snowflake — platform-specific certificates, worth it when your target employers use them.

Academic qualifications
A Computer Science / IT degree. No master's needed — an important difference from data science.

Legal duty
PDPA 2010 — data engineers handle personal data at scale, and are responsible for how it is stored, who can reach it, and how long it is kept. This is a real part of the job.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — Maths, EnglishSPM
    The same as software engineering. You do not need the statistical depth data science demands — this is engineering work, not statistics work.
  2. Computer Science or IT degree3–4 tahun
    Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology.
    No master's needed — and this is an important difference from data science, which often demands one. You can start work straight after a degree.
  3. SQL, Python, cloudKemahiran
    SQL at depth — not simple queries, but understanding how the database actually executes them.
    Python — the default language for data pipelines.
    One cloud platform — AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. This is the part that genuinely raises your salary, and the certificate genuinely gets checked.
    Pipeline tools — Airflow, dbt, Spark for large data.
  4. The work nobody notices until it failsRealiti
    When a data pipeline works, nobody mentions it. When it fails at 3am, the whole company's dashboards are empty.
    That is the shape of this work: building something reliable, and being responsible when it is not.
    It is also why it pays well. Companies pay for reliability, and there are fewer people who can deliver it than people who can build a model.

Questions students actually ask

Why do data engineers get paid more than data scientists?
Because supply is smaller and demand is larger, and both come from the same cause.
Demand: every company that wants to do anything with data needs someone to get that data somewhere usable first. That holds whether they are building models or only want dashboards. Far fewer companies have problems that need a data scientist.
Supply: data science has been marketed heavily to students; data engineering has barely been marketed at all. Plenty of graduates chase one and ignore the other.
And the work is less appealing to sell: nobody makes a poster about a reliable pipeline. But when a pipeline fails, the whole company's dashboards are empty — and companies pay to avoid that.
What this means for you: if you are interested in data but do not want a master's, or statistics is not your strength, this is a shorter route to higher pay. It needs software engineering skills, not statistical ones.
