Short answerA bank manager runs a branch or a portfolio — a team, sales targets, credit approvals, customer complaints, and compliance.
Banking in Malaysia is regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia, and its professional body is the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB), which offers the Chartered Banker route.
Unlike an Accountant or Auditor, there is no mandatory individual licence to be a bank manager — you rise through the institution. But AICB certification is the usual way to stand out.
What surprises people: branch banking today is sales and risk work, not counter work. Transactions have moved to the phone. What is left in the branch is lending, credit and relationships.

What does a Bank Manager do?

Manages bank branch operations, teams and financial product sales targets.

A day in the life

A bank manager runs the branch: tracking sales targets (deposits, loans, insurance), approving cases, managing staff, and resolving customer complaints.
A typical day starts with a morning briefing, then meetings, key-customer visits and performance reviews.
Month-end and quarter-end are busiest due to targets.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: like leading a team, are comfortable with sales targets, connect well with people from all walks of life, and respect procedures.
Less suitable if you: dislike target pressure or KPI-driven work.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Graduate executive: RM3,000–4,500.
Credit officer / relationship manager: RM4,500–8,000.
Branch manager: RM8,000–15,000.
Regional / senior manager: RM15,000–30,000.
Investment banking and wealth pay more but with far heavier target pressure.

Which branch pays
Retail banking — most positions, moderate pay, constant sales targets.
Business / corporate banking — assessing and lending to companies. Higher pay, more analytical work.
Wealth management — high-value clients, large commissions, large pressure.
Islamic banking — a growing segment and Malaysia is one of the world's main hubs. Shariah knowledge is a real advantage here.
Risk and compliance — the fastest-growing area, see Compliance officer.

A reality to know before entering
Sales targets are part of almost every client-facing role, including ones that sound like service. If you are uncomfortable with monthly targets, retail banking will be hard.
The non-sales-driven parts — risk, credit, compliance, operations — exist and are growing, but you have to aim for them deliberately.

City vs hometown

Big advantage: banks have branches in every town in Malaysia.
You can request a transfer back to your home state — many branch managers serve in their hometown.
HQ roles (higher pay, strategic work) are in KL.

Study path after SPM / UEC

Finance/Banking degreeThe first thing to understand
Branch banking has changed completely. Daily transactions — transfers, payments, balance queries — have moved to phone apps. Banks have closed branches nationwide.
What is left in the branch is the work an app cannot do: judging whether someone deserves a loan, selling complex financial products, and managing business relationships.
That means a banking career today is a sales and risk career, not an administrative one.

The route
SPM → degree (finance, accounting, economics, business) → a bank graduate programme → one function (credit / business banking / wealth) → supervisor → branch manager or senior relationship manager.

No mandatory licence — which cuts both ways
You do not need to pass an exam to become a bank manager, unlike an Accountant or a stockbroker.
That makes entry easier. It also means you have no portable qualification — your standing comes from your record inside the institution. AICB certification is how you fix that.

Related fields
Compliance officer — the fastest-growing area in banking. Financial analyst if you want analysis rather than clients. Accounting as an alternative foundation. Financial planning if client relationships are the part you enjoy.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

Public: UM, UKM, UPM, UUM (known for business), UiTM.
Private: Sunway, Taylor's, INTI, HELP.
Fields: finance, banking, economics or business management.

Tuition fees

Public: RM1,500–RM4,000 per year.
Private: RM50,000–RM90,000 total.
Banking certifications (AICB) after employment are usually bank-funded.

Scholarships

Bank Negara (Kijang), JPA, MARA scholarships and banks' own foundations (Maybank, CIMB have sponsorship programmes).
PTPTN for everyone.

Certification & licence

No mandatory individual licence
To be a bank manager you need no personal licence. The bank itself is licensed by Bank Negara Malaysia; you work under the institution's licence.
That differs from an Accountant (MIA), a stockbroker (CMSRL) or an estate agent (LPPEH).

AICB — the professional body
The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers is the professional body for banks in Malaysia. It offers:
Chartered Banker — the main professional qualification.
Credit certificates — for loan and credit officers.
Compliance and AML/CFT certificates — in high demand, see Compliance officer.

Product-specific approvals
If you sell investment products, unit trusts or insurance, the relevant product approval is required — FIMM registration for unit trusts and PRS, or a Securities Commission licence for regulated activity. See Financial planner.

An obligation that binds everyone
AMLA 2001 — the Anti-Money Laundering Act places reporting duties on bank staff. This is not optional and not a formality; failing to report a suspicious transaction carries personal consequences.

Future & the AI era

Digital banking is shrinking branch networks — the manager's role is shifting from transactions to advice & relationships.
Managers strong in digital products and wealth management stay relevant; counter-operations-only roles are at risk.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — Maths, English, Accounting PrinciplesSPM
Maths and English are the base. Accounting Principles helps but is not required.
Banking hires graduates from many fields — finance, accounting, economics, business administration, even non-business.
  2. Degree — finance, accounting, economics or business3–4 tahun
Public or private university. The most direct fields: Finance, Banking, Accounting, Economics.
Entry to the big banks happens through graduate programmes — Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank, RHB, Hong Leong and international banks run structured intakes each year.
  3. Executive → supervisor → branch manager3–6 tahun
You start in one function — customer service, credit, business banking, or wealth — and rise.
The fastest-rising routes are credit and business banking, because that is where the bank makes its money. Customer service teaches you operations but rises more slowly.
  4. AICB — Chartered Banker and specialist certificatesSepanjang kerjaya
The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers offers the Chartered Banker route plus certificates in credit, compliance, and anti-money-laundering.
It is not mandatory, but it is the most recognised professional signal in Malaysian banking — and compliance/AML certificates are now in strong demand because of regulatory pressure.

Questions students actually ask

Is banking shrinking because of digital?
Branches are shrinking. Banking is not.
Malaysian banks have been closing branches steadily as daily transactions move to phone apps. Teller and counter roles are genuinely declining.
But work is moving the other way in: credit assessment, business banking, wealth management, risk, compliance and AML, cybersecurity, and data.
Malaysia has also issued digital bank licences, which creates new kinds of banking roles.
Practical conclusion: do not enter banking expecting steady administrative counter work. Enter aiming at credit, risk, compliance or business banking — that is where roles are growing, not shrinking.
Do I need a finance degree?
No. Banking hires from many fields, and the big banks' graduate programmes openly take non-finance graduates.
The most direct degrees: Finance, Banking, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration.
But banks also hire maths, statistics, computer science and engineering graduates — particularly for risk, data and the digital side.
What matters more than the degree subject: the ability to talk to clients, comfort with numbers, and the ability to carry targets.
To win a real edge: AICB, or Islamic finance knowledge, or data analysis skills. All three differentiate you more than the degree name.
Do bank jobs have sales targets?
Yes — and this is what most people do not expect.
Almost every client-facing role in retail banking carries targets: credit cards, loans, insurance, unit trusts, new accounts. That includes roles that sound like customer service.
Targets are usually monthly, and performance against them affects bonuses and promotion.
If that does not suit you, there are banking routes that are not sales-driven:
Credit and risk — assessing loan applications rather than selling them.
Compliance and AML — growing fast, see Compliance officer.
Operations, internal finance, technology.
These routes exist and pay well, but you have to aim for them deliberately — you will not fall into them from branch banking.
