Short answerA finance manager manages a company's money — budgets, cash flow, financing, forecasting, and investment decisions.
This differs from an Accountant: accounting records what has happened; financial management decides what happens next.
No mandatory licence is attached to this post, but most finance managers hold a professional accounting qualification — ACCA, CIMA, MICPA or a recognised accounting degree — and many register with MIA as C.A.(M).
CIMA in particular is designed for this route, because it emphasises management accounting rather than auditing.
This is a post you rise into, not one you start in.

What does a Finance Manager do?

Leads company finances: budgets, cash flow and financial strategy.

A day in the life

Finance managers guard the company's "cash lifeline": cash flow, budgets, monthly reports and financing decisions.
A typical day: reviewing cash in/out, budget meetings with other departments, checking the accounts team's reports, presenting numbers to the CEO/board.
Month-end and financial year-end are busiest (closing the books).

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: are rigorous with numbers yet communicate well, can say "no" to unjustified spending, and enjoy seeing the big picture of a business.
Less suitable if you: prefer purely technical work without meetings, or are uncomfortable making decisions.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Finance executive: RM3,000–4,500.
Financial analyst / FP&A: RM5,000–9,000.
Finance manager: RM8,000–16,000.
Financial controller: RM15,000–28,000.
CFO: RM25,000–70,000+ depending on company size.
Multinationals and listed companies pay at the top end; SMEs pay less but give broader scope earlier.

What accelerates the climb
A professional qualification. ACCA, CIMA or MICPA is the single biggest differentiator between a finance executive stuck at RM5,000 and one moving to RM12,000.
FP&A experience. Forecasting and business cases put you closer to management decisions than closing books does.
Cross-border experience. Regional companies value people who understand tax, currency and reporting across several countries.

A structural advantage of the field
Every company needs a finance function. You are not locked into one industry — manufacturing, technology, healthcare, retail all need the same skills.
That gives you portability many careers do not have.

What is changing
Transactional work — invoice processing, reconciliation, report preparation — is increasingly automated.
That squeezes junior accounting posts but raises the value of people who can interpret the numbers and argue for a decision. Move toward analysis and judgement, not processing.

City vs hometown

Every mid-to-large company needs a finance manager — opportunities exist in all industrial cities: KL, Penang, Johor, Ipoh, Kuantan, Kuching, KK.
Family firms in small towns hire too — lower pay but lower living costs.

Study path after SPM / UEC

Accounting/Finance degree + experienceThe distinction that defines this career
Accounting records what has happened. Financial management decides what happens next.
You are not closing books; you are deciding whether the company can afford a new branch, whether to borrow or issue equity, and how much cash to hold.
That means the work requires business judgement, not just technical accuracy.

The route
SPM → accounting or finance degree → finance executive → ACCA / CIMA / MICPA while working → FP&A analyst → finance manager → financial controller → CFO.

Which qualification to choose
CIMA if you know you want corporate finance. It is designed specifically for this — management accounting, not auditing.
ACCA if you want options open, including moving abroad.
MICPA if you want a strong local route and MIA recognition.
All three lead to MIA and the C.A.(M) designation. See Accountant for details.

Why you cannot start here
Finance manager is not an entry post. You need five to ten years to understand how money actually moves in a business before you can manage it.
That means your plan is to pick the first job that teaches you most — and FP&A teaches more than transactional accounting.

Related fields
Accountant — the same foundation and qualifications. Financial analyst — investment analysis rather than operations. Auditor — an alternative route into corporate finance. Banking if the financing side appeals.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

Same as the accountant route: UM, UKM, UPM, UiTM, UUM or private universities with ACCA exemptions.
CIMA (management-accounting focus) suits this path especially well.

Tuition fees

Public: RM1,500–RM4,000 per year; private RM60,000–RM110,000.
ACCA/CIMA: RM30,000–RM50,000 self-funded — most employers share the cost.

Scholarships

Degree stage: JPA, MARA, PTPTN.
Professional stage: employer sponsorship is the usual route — pick employers with ACCA/CIMA funding policies.

Certification & licence

No licence for this post — but one legal rule
No licence is needed to be a finance manager. But under the Accountants Act 1967, the word "Accountant" is protected: you may not call yourself an Accountant without MIA membership, even if you do finance work. See Accountant.

LCCILCCI / Pearson — UKA school-level certificate, not a professional qualificationDoes not lead to MIA on its ownLow — it is a foundation, not a destination

Why CIMA is the choice most aligned with this work
There is a genuine difference between these bodies, and it is not marketing.
ACCA and ICAEW are built around reporting and audit — what has happened, and whether it is stated correctly.
CIMA is built around management accounting — budgeting, costing, performance analysis, decision support. That is, what happens next.
That is exactly the difference between accounting and financial management. If you know you want to work inside a company rather than in an audit firm, CIMA is designed for you.

Useful additional qualifications
CFA (CFA Institute, United States) — if your role involves investment and valuation. See Financial analyst.
FRM (GARP, United States) — if you are heading toward risk.
Both are qualifications, not licences. In Malaysia, licences in finance come from the Securities Commission or Bank Negara Malaysia, and only for particular regulated activities.

Pros

Cons

Future & the AI era

Automation is taking over data entry & reconciliation — finance teams get smaller but more strategic.
Managers strong in analytics who can advise the business will rise; report-compilers are at risk.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — Maths, Accounting Principles, EnglishSPM
Accounting Principles gives you a clear head start although it is not required. Maths and English are the base.
Additional Maths is useful for later forecasting and valuation work.
  2. Accounting / finance degree3–4 tahun
An accounting degree recognised under the First Schedule Part I of the Accountants Act 1967 gives you a direct route to MIA. A finance or economics degree also works, but you will need a professional qualification to rise.
See Accountant for the MIA route in detail.
  3. ACCA / CIMA / MICPA while working3–5 tahun
CIMA is the qualification most aligned with this route — it is management accounting: budgeting, costing, performance, strategic decisions.
ACCA is broader and highly portable internationally.
MICPA is local and recognised under the First Schedule Part II.
All can be taken while working, which means you earn experience and qualification at the same time.
  4. Executive → analyst → finance manager5–10 tahun
You rise through corporate accounting, financial planning and analysis (FP&A), or treasury.
FP&A is the best route to a finance manager post because it is forward-looking — forecasting, budgeting, business cases — rather than closing books.
  5. Financial controller → CFOSelepas itu
A financial controller runs the whole finance function. The CFO post is strategic: capital structure, expansion, mergers, and investor relations.
At this level a professional qualification and MIA membership are near-universal.

Questions students actually ask

What is the difference from an accountant?
Direction in time.
An Accountant records and reports what has happened — financial statements, tax, monthly closing, compliance with accounting standards.
A finance manager decides what happens next — next year's budget, whether a project is worth it, whether to borrow or issue equity, how much cash to hold.
Legally: the title "Accountant" is protected under the Accountants Act 1967 and requires MIA membership. "Finance manager" is a job title, not a protected one.
Practically: most finance managers started as accountants. The qualifications overlap entirely — ACCA, CIMA, MICPA. The difference is which way you specialise after the first few years.
CIMA in particular is designed for the financial management route rather than the audit route.
CIMA or ACCA?
It depends where you want to end up.
Choose CIMA if you know you want corporate finance — budgeting, costing, performance analysis, strategic decision support. It is designed specifically for roles inside companies rather than inside audit firms.
Choose ACCA if you want to keep options open. ACCA covers audit, tax, reporting and management finance, and is recognised in more countries. If you might work abroad or might move into audit, ACCA is safer.
Choose MICPA if you plan to stay in Malaysia and want a strong local route.
All three are recognised under the First Schedule of the Accountants Act 1967 and lead to MIA membership and the C.A.(M) designation.
What matters most: pick one and finish it. A half-finished qualification is worth nothing, and most people stuck at mid-level pay are the ones who stopped halfway.
Will automation eliminate finance jobs?
It is eliminating part of it, and you should plan around that.
What is shrinking: invoice processing, account reconciliation, data entry, repetitive report preparation. This is junior accounting work, and it is being automated fast.
What is growing: interpreting the numbers, building business cases, modelling scenarios, and arguing for a decision in front of management.
A system can produce a forecast. It cannot stand in a board meeting and defend the assumptions behind it, or make a judgement about a risk with no past data.
Practical effect for you:
1. Do not build a career on transactional work. Move toward FP&A, analysis and decision support.
2. Professional qualifications matter more, not less — they certify judgement, not processing.
3. Data and modelling skills are now a clear advantage.
