Research scientists run experiments on unanswered questions: designing studies, collecting & analysing data, writing journal papers & grants, supervising students.
Workplaces: universities, government institutes (MARDI, IMR, MPOB), corporate R&D.
The cycle: idea → grant → experiment → publication — repeat.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: are endlessly curious, survive 90% failed experiments, enjoy writing, and will do a PhD.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Research assistant (with a bachelor's): RM2,500–4,000.
Research officer (with a master's): RM4,000–7,000.
Government research institutes (MPOB, MARDI, FRIM, SIRIM, NIH): on the public service scheme — structured pay, fixed increments, and a pension.
Researcher with a PhD (government or university): on the scheme or by institution.
Industry R&D researcher: RM6,000–15,000 — higher pay, narrower focus.
University lecturer: on the scheme, with advancement based on publications and grants.
Research head / programme director: considerably higher, and dependent on a grant record.

What to understand about this list
Research pays less than industry for the same level of education.
Someone with a PhD in chemistry will earn more in pharmaceutical R&D than in academia.
That is not a reason to avoid research — it is a reason to choose it knowingly, because what you are buying is autonomy over which question to answer, not salary.

The rarely mentioned Malaysian advantage
Government research institutes are public service posts.
Structured pay, fixed increments, and a pension — stability that rarely exists in research in most countries, where researchers live grant contract to grant contract.
For someone who wants a research career without the precariousness that usually accompanies it, this is the least-known and most worthwhile option to look at.

A research degree should be paid for by someone else.
How it gets funded:
Scholarships — government, university, agency and foundation.
Graduate research assistantships — you are paid an allowance to work on your supervisor's grant while your degree runs.
Supervisor grant money — if a supervisor holds an active research grant, it often includes student funding.
Industry sponsorship — for applied research tied to a company.
Why this matters: a PhD takes three to five years. Paying for it yourself means three to five years without income plus fees, and the financial return rarely justifies that.
Questions to ask before accepting a place:

What AI changes — and this is the field most directly affected
Exposed: literature searching, paper summarisation, routine data analysis, code writing, first drafts of manuscripts, and preliminary hypothesis generation. These tools have already changed how research is done day to day, and researchers who use them work considerably faster.
The larger change: protein structure prediction, materials discovery, and climate modelling show that AI now generates useful scientific hypotheses, not only processes data.
Not exposed, and this is the core of the profession:
Choosing the question. A model answers the question it is given. Deciding which question matters and is answerable is the whole of the research skill.
Physical experiment. A hypothesis has to be tested, and testing happens in a laboratory or in the field.
Judging whether a result can be trusted. Bias, artefacts, control failures, and results too good to be true. This skill becomes more valuable as generating results becomes easy.
Responsibility and integrity. Someone signs the paper, and scientific reputation is built on reliability.
The most useful conclusion: researchers who use these tools well will replace those who do not — but judgement about which question is worth answering, and whether an answer is true, remains human work.

A researcher whose topic connects to nothing here faces a far harder route, and often has to go abroad.
This is not a reason to choose a topic you are not interested in — it is a reason to find the meeting point between what interests you and what is funded.

The map a student should see before choosing a specialisation
Malaysian science funding follows Malaysian industry. A science aligned to one of these has a career behind it:
Palm oil and rubberMPOB, the Rubber Board, large plantation companies, downstream research. This is Malaysia's largest research industry and it is rarely mentioned to science students.
Semiconductors and materials — Penang, Kulim. Materials science, chemistry, physics.
Agriculture and foodMARDI, the food industry, food safety.
Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals — production, testing, compliance.
Energy — oil and gas, and now renewables.
Environment — the Department of Environment, consultancies, industrial monitoring. Growing, because regulation is increasing.
Forestry and biodiversityFRIM, national parks, conservation.
Public health — diagnostic laboratories, disease surveillance.
Practical advice: choose your final year project, industrial training and postgraduate topic to touch one of these. A pure science that connects to no Malaysian industry is a harder route, and it is better to choose it knowingly than to discover it later.

The skills that decide whether a researcher succeeds
Experimental design and statisticsthe most important.
Writing. Unpublished research does not exist, and writing clearly is half the job.
Grant writing. The skill that decides whether you lead research or assist it, and it is rarely taught formally.
Data analysis and programming.
Collaboration. Modern research is done in teams, across institutions and borders.
Patience with failure. Most experiments do not work, and that is not personal failure — it is how the method functions.

The honest part
It is a long route — a master's and PhD mean five to seven years after the bachelor's.
Funding is uncertain, and academic posts are competitive.
Pay is lower than industry for the same level of education.
What balances it: it is one of the few jobs where you decide which question to answer, and Malaysia's government research institutes offer public service stability that rarely exists in research in other countries.

If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

UM, USM, UKM, UPM for the base; local PhDs are usually funded.

Tuition fees

Public degrees are cheap; MSc/PhDs are usually FUNDED (grants/MyBrainSc) — don't self-pay.

A science bachelor's alone is not a research career — and this is the most important thing on this page
Many students choose science because they picture themselves in a research lab, discovering something.
The reality: research posts in Malaysia almost always require a postgraduate qualification — a master's or a PhD. A bachelor's alone leads somewhere else.
Where a science bachelor's actually leads:
QA/QC and quality control laboratories in manufacturing — the largest share, and where most science graduates actually work.
Laboratory analyst — testing labs, hospitals, government agencies.
Technical sales and applications — selling laboratory equipment, chemicals or reagents. Pays more than lab work, and almost no students consider it.
Teaching — schools, matriculation colleges.
Regulatory and compliance — government agencies and industry.
All of these are legitimate and useful work. But they are not research, and a student entering a science degree expecting research should know that before enrolling, not in their final year.
If research is your goal, plan for a master's or PhD from the start — and read the funding section below, because it changes that decision entirely.
