What does a Lawyer (Advocate & Solicitor) do?

Lawyers represent & advise clients in criminal, civil and corporate cases — defenders of justice and experts in legal documents.

A day in the life

Litigation lawyers spend time preparing arguments, meeting clients, and arguing in court. Corporate lawyers review contracts, negotiate deals, and advise companies. Both involve heavy reading, writing and critical thinking. Hours can be long, especially near trials or deal deadlines.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: are articulate & strong in language, enjoy reading & analysis, meticulous with detail, and handle pressure. Less suitable if you: dislike heavy reading, are weak at writing, or uncomfortable with confrontation.

Salary & career ladder

Pupil/junior lawyer (0-3 yrs): RM3,000-4,500 · Lawyer (3-7 yrs): RM5,500-10,000 · Senior lawyer / firm partner: RM12,000-30,000+ · Big-firm partner: RM40,000+. Corporate lawyers at large firms & MNCs tend to earn the most.

Study path after SPM / UEC

Law degree (LLB)For Law (LLB) at a public university via UPU: typically good STPM/Foundation/Matriculation + excellent credits in Bahasa Melayu & English. Language & writing skills are crucial. If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Certification & licence

Law is the most tightly controlled profession on this list
You cannot practise law in Malaysia without being admitted by the High Court as an Advocate & Solicitor. There is no shortcut, and no foreign qualification alone is enough.
And something many people do not realise: Malaysia has three separate jurisdictions — Peninsular, Sabah, and Sarawak — each with its own admission process.

The qualifications and exams — where they come from
StageWho issues it (country)What it actually isStanding in MalaysiaUse abroad
Local LLBA recognised Malaysian universityA 4-year law degreeUsually CLP-exempt → straight to chamberingLow — law is bound to a country
Overseas LLBUK / Australian / other universitiesA law degreeRecognised, but you must sit the CLPUseful in the country of the degree
CLPLegal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB)MalaysiaAn exam on Malaysian legal practice. Low pass rateMandatory for anyone not exemptNone — it is a Malaysia-only exam
ChamberingA law firm, under supervision9 months of practical training (pupillage)Mandatory for everyoneNone
AdmissionThe High Court + Bar CouncilMalaysiaAdmission as an Advocate & Solicitor, under the Legal Profession Act 1976The only thing that lets you practiseNone — not recognised abroad
Sabah / SarawakEach state's own Advocates OrdinanceA separate admission processPeninsular admission is not enoughNone
Barrister (UK)The Inns of Court — England & WalesTraining and call to the English BarOne recognised route, but chambering + admission are still requiredHigh in the UK and common law jurisdictions

The four mandatory steps (Peninsular Malaysia)
1. A recognised law degree — a recognised local LLB, or a recognised overseas degree.
2. The CLP — unless you are exempt. Holders of a recognised local LLB are usually exempt; overseas degree holders usually are not.
3. Nine months of chambering (pupillage) under a qualified lawyer.
4. Admission by the High Court and registration with the Bar Council, under the Legal Profession Act 1976.

Sabah and Sarawak are separate
This is not a small detail. A lawyer admitted in the Peninsula cannot automatically practise in Sabah or Sarawak.
Each has its own Advocates Ordinance, its own bar body (the Sabah Law Society, the Advocates Association of Sarawak), and its own admission conditions — including residence conditions in some cases.
If you are from Sabah or Sarawak and plan to return, check your state's requirements before choosing a degree.

Foreign qualifications: what they give you and what they do not
Being called to the Bar as a barrister in England & Wales, or qualifying as a solicitor there, is a prestigious and portable qualification. It is also one of the recognised routes toward qualifying here.
But it does not by itself let you practise in Malaysia. You still have to complete chambering and High Court admission.
The reverse is also true: Malaysian admission does not let you practise in the UK, Singapore or Australia. Every jurisdiction controls its own legal profession — law is among the least portable qualifications there is.

If you do not want to go to court
A law degree is useful without Bar admission: compliance, company secretary, the civil service, in-house legal advisory (within limits), and policy.
You cannot call yourself a lawyer or advise the public on law without admission — but the training itself remains valuable.

Future & the AI era

AI can help with legal research & document review, but courtroom arguments, negotiation, strategy & ethical judgement need human lawyers. Lawyers who use AI tools become more efficient. Routine legal work (simple document review) is at risk of automation.

Key SPM subjects

Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Inggeris, Sejarah (sasaran A)

Questions students actually ask

How long does it take to become a lawyer in Malaysia?
About 6–7 years: pre-university + LLB (3–4 years) + CLP (1 year) + 9 months of chambering before you are called to the Bar.
Do I still need CLP if I study law at a local university?
It depends — some local public university degrees are exempt from CLP; overseas graduates and some private universities must pass it. Check the programme's recognition status.
