Professional astronomy barely exists as employment in Malaysia. There is no local astronomy industry, and astronomy research posts at Malaysian universities can be counted on your fingers.
But three things students are not told change this picture entirely:
First, there is a genuinely growing, salaried Malaysian astronomy route — falak syarie. Salary range
Falak officer / religious officer with a falak specialisation: on the public service scheme — structured pay, fixed increments, and a pension. The most stable Malaysian astronomy route.
Science officer / science education (MYSA, National Planetarium): public service scheme.
Science educator and outreach (science centres, museums, media): RM3,000–7,000.
University lecturer: requires a PhD; academic scheme.
Postdoctoral researcher abroad: by country and grant; contract-based.
And the line where most astronomy people actually end up:

What to understand about that list
The last line is not a failure. It is the ordinary, well-known pattern worldwide.
Astronomy trains people to extract weak signals from noisy, enormous data, and that is exactly what data science is — trained on harder problems.
So the real advice for a Malaysian student is this:
Pursue astronomy if you love it, but build programming and statistics seriously along the way.
Do that, and you are not taking the risk you think you are taking — you are training yourself in the most in-demand skills in Malaysia right now, using material you genuinely love.
The real danger is not pursuing astronomy. It is pursuing astronomy without building those skills.

Do not self-fund a PhD — and this is the most important financial advice in science

How it gets funded:
Scholarships — government, university, agency and foundation.
Graduate research assistantships — you are paid an allowance to work on your supervisor's grant while your degree runs.
Supervisor grant money — if a supervisor holds an active research grant, it often includes student funding.
Industry sponsorship — for applied research tied to a company.
Why this matters: a PhD takes three to five years. Paying for it yourself means three to five years without income plus fees, and the financial return rarely justifies that.
Questions to ask before accepting a place:
Does this supervisor hold an active grant?
Does this place come with a scholarship or allowance?
How many of their students finish, and where do they go?
The right supervisor matters more than the right university, and students are rarely told that.

What AI changes
Exposed: routine data reduction, object classification, and pattern detection — and this field already uses it extensively, because astronomical datasets are far too large for humans to inspect.
That is not a threat here; it is how the field operates.
What it does not do:
Deciding which question is worth asking — that is astronomy.
Designing observations and deciding what to measure.
Interpreting results that contradict theory — that is where discovery happens.

Astronomy training is one of the most transferable trainings in all of science.
Astronomy trains people to extract weak signals from noisy, enormous data — detecting a planet that dims a star by a fraction of a percent, separating a distant galaxy from noise.
That is a data science skill, trained on harder problems than most commercial ones.
That is why astronomy PhD holders worldwide are hired into data science, quantitative finance and technologythat is the ordinary pattern, not a failure.

So what to actually do
Take a Physics degree. Astronomy degrees are rarely offered at bachelor's level here, and physics is the content of astronomy — you lose nothing, and it leads into the semiconductor and E&E cluster if astronomy does not happen.

If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Technical skills — and this determines everything

Machine learning — now standard in this field.
Handling large datasets.
