Salary range
Production operator: RM1,700–2,500 (plus shift allowance) — and this is the role most exposed to automation.
Junior technician: RM2,300–3,300.
Maintenance technician: RM3,000–4,800.
PLC / automation technician: RM4,500–7,500 — the hardest role to fill.
Robot technician: RM4,500–8,000, and rising.
Quality / metrology technician: RM3,500–6,000.
Lead technician / production supervisor: RM5,500–9,500.
Process engineering / continuous improvement executive: RM5,000–10,000 — and this is where the lean route leads.
Engineer (with a diploma or degree): RM4,500–9,000 starting.

The gap that explains this whole page
Between operator (RM1,700–2,500) and automation technician (RM4,500–7,500).
That is not a difference in effort. It is a difference in whether you operate the system or understand it.
And automation widens that gap every year — it destroys the first role and adds demand for the second.

The rarely advertised opportunity
Employer sponsorship for further study.
Large factories often pay for good technicians to continue to a diploma or degree while working.
It means a student who could not fund a degree at 18 can have one at 25, paid for by the employer, while earning throughout.
Ask about this at interview.

The cyclical reality
Manufacturing follows global demand. There are busy years with heavy overtime, and slow years with reduced hiring.
Skilled staff are rarely let go; operators are affected first.
That is another reason to move from operator to technician as quickly as possible, and to save during high-overtime years.

The real comparison, not the usual one
People compare "skills" against "a degree" and conclude the degree wins. That is the wrong comparison for most students reading this page.
The right comparison is between an accredited skills route and the unaccredited private diploma the same student was about to spend tens of thousands of ringgit on.
Against that comparison, the skills route wins clearly:
The cost is far lower — and some programmes offer industry-standard training at low fees.
You start earning 3–4 years sooner.
The qualification means something — an SKM is issued by a government body and can be verified, unlike a certificate from a college nobody recognises.
And the work cannot be offshored. Malaysia's electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning systems have to be fixed in Malaysia.
When a degree genuinely is better: if you will finish it, from a recognised institution, in a field that has jobs. Those are the real conditions, and they deserve testing honestly before borrowing money.

What AI and automation change — and this page will be blunt
Exposed, and it is happening now: machine operation, material handling, visual inspection, packing, and repetitive assembly. Malaysian factories are investing in automation, and national policy supports it. Operator roles will decline.
Also exposed: production scheduling, reporting, and basic data analysis.
Growing, and this is the whole argument of this page:
Maintenance. Every automated machine breaks, and every hour of downtime is expensive. More automation means more to maintain.

The Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) — the ladder that defines a TVET career

Specific advice about choosing your SKM
Pick mechatronics or industrial automation if you can.
A mechanical-only or electrical-only SKM leaves you with half the picture.
A modern factory is a combined system — mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and control in one machine.
The technician who can move across all of it is the one a factory cannot easily replace, and that is the whole of job security in this field.

The skill that most decides your pay
PLCs and control systems.
Every automated line runs on them, and the number of technicians who can genuinely program and fault-find PLCs is small.
If your training programme does not teach it, add it yourself. It is the most directly worthwhile investment in this field.
After that: robot maintenance, pneumatics and hydraulics, predictive maintenance, and statistical process control.

The skill TVET students least expect
Lean and continuous improvement.
This is not a mechanical skill — it is a way of thinking about waste, flow and delay.
It is the skill that takes a technician from maintenance into process engineering, and those roles pay considerably more.
Factories teach it internally, and few technicians take it seriously. That is the opportunity.

The Malaysian context
Malaysia has a real manufacturing base — electronics, automotive, medical devices, food, chemicals, and rubber and palm-based products.
National policy targets higher-value production, and that means more automation and more technicians.
This work clusters — Penang, Kulim, the Klang valley, Johor, Melaka. Be prepared to move if you do not live near one.

The opportunity to ask about at interview

Shift work, including nights, because plants run 24 hours.
Noisy, hot, and sometimes repetitive.
The manufacturing sector follows global demand cycles, and hiring moves with it.
What balances it: structured employers with EPF and benefits, employer-paid training, demand that grows with automation, and a clear route from an SKM to a five-figure salary.

If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 applies.
Lockout/tagout — a machine starting while someone is working on it is a common cause of injury in manufacturing.

  1. SPM — and the trait that differentiatesSPM
    Physics, Mathematics and Living Skills are directly useful.
    You do not need high results to start an SKM.
    The trait that decides whether you become a technician rather than an operator: wanting to understand why, not only how.
    An operator learns the button sequence. A technician understands what the machine is doing and why it stopped.
    This can be built now and it is free: when something breaks at home, try to understand the cause before replacing it.
    English — equipment manuals, SOPs and manufacturer training are in English, because most Malaysian factories use international equipment. This is the direct difference between an operator role and a technician role.
  2. SKM — and choose the specialism carefully1–3 tahun
