Short answerA cloud engineer designs and runs the infrastructure companies rent from AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud instead of buying their own servers.
This is one of the few IT careers where certificates are genuinely worth money — because they verify skill on a specific platform an employer already pays to use.
No licence, but the AWS/Azure/GCP certificate ladder functions almost like one in practice.
Why demand is solid in Malaysia: the major cloud providers have invested in regional capacity, and Malaysian companies are moving off their own servers onto the cloud. That migration needs people who know how to do it.

What does a Cloud Engineer do?

Builds and manages the cloud infrastructure all modern apps run on.

A day in the life

Cloud engineers build & run infrastructure on AWS/Azure/GCP: architecture design, provisioning (Terraform), cost optimisation, uptime assurance.
A typical day: infra-as-code, performance troubleshooting, cloud bill reviews (saving the company money!), system upgrades.
Physical servers → web consoles: the new world of IT infra.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: prefer systems & architecture to UIs, care about cost & reliability, and love automation.
Less suitable if you: want to build user-visible features.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Junior / associate: RM5,000–8,000.
Cloud engineer (3–5 years): RM9,000–16,000.
Senior: RM16,000–25,000.
Cloud architect: RM25,000–45,000.
Banks, telcos and technology MNCs pay at the top end.

The number worth noticing
An IT support technician on RM2,500 who takes the cloud certificate route can reach RM10,000+ in roughly four years.
The cost is a few thousand ringgit of exam fees — often paid by the employer — and evenings spent studying.
That is among the highest returns on study time of any career on this site, and it needs no degree.

An advantage that does not exist in most other careers
Software work can be done from anywhere. A developer in Malaysia working remotely for a Singapore or American company is paid in SGD or USD while paying rent in ringgit.
The difference is large — large enough that it changes the whole arithmetic of this career, and it does not exist for a doctor, a lawyer or a civil engineer, whose licences are tied to a country.
But it is conditional on two things, and both can be built starting from SPM:
English at a real working level — not merely a pass, but enough to argue about system design in a meeting.
Work you can show — GitHub, projects that run, real contributions. Companies hiring remotely cannot interview you the usual way, so they lean on what they can see.
Students who build both while studying end up in an entirely different salary market from classmates who only collected certificates.

What AI and automation change
Exposed: routine provisioning, configuration scripts, repetitive administration. Infrastructure-as-code and AI tools already do much of this.
Not exposed: designing systems that stay up when something fails, optimising cost (companies waste large sums on misconfigured cloud), and deciding what should be built and how.
Running the other way: every AI workload runs on cloud infrastructure. The surge in AI use has increased demand for people who can build and run it.
One skill worth more than students expect: cost optimisation. Companies moving to the cloud often find their bills spike, and someone who can cut them pays their own salary several times over.

City vs hometown

KL & remote; Johor is emerging as a regional data-centre hub (AWS, Microsoft, GDS are there).
Remote work for SG companies is very common in this field.

Study path after SPM / UEC

IT degree + AWS/Azure/GCP certsThe IT career most reachable without a degree
The cloud platforms test you directly. Their exams are hard to pass without real ability, and employers trust them for that reason.
The result: someone starting as an IT support technician on RM2,500 can reach RM10,000+ in four years through certificates, without ever going to university.
That is not a motivational story — it is a route people genuinely take in Malaysia every year.

The route
SPM → IT diploma / degree <i>or</i> IT support → cloud certificates (Fundamentals → Associate → Professional) → cloud engineer → cloud architect.

Pick one platform
AWS — most widespread in Malaysia, and the largest supply of jobs. Start here if unsure.
Azure — strong in large companies, banks and the government sector already on Microsoft.
Google Cloud — smaller here, but strong in data-heavy companies.
Do not try all three. Depth in one is worth more than shallowness in three.

Why demand is solid
Malaysian companies are moving off their own servers onto the cloud, and the major providers have built regional capacity. That migration is work, and it needs people who have done it.

Related fields
DevOps engineer — overlaps very strongly; plenty of people do both. Cloud security engineer — a better-paid specialisation. Network engineer — a common way in. Data engineer — data pipelines live on cloud infrastructure.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

Any IT background (APU/MMU/UTM/polytechnic); official cloud certs are this field's real credentials.

Tuition fees

AWS/Azure certs: USD100–300 each.
The full path under RM5,000 — far cheaper than a second degree.

Scholarships

AWS re/Start & Azure run free career-switch programmes — watch for Malaysian cohorts.

Certification & licence

No licence — but this is the biggest exception in IT
No body licenses cloud engineers. But the AWS/Azure/GCP certificate ladder functions almost like one in practice, and it is the one place in IT where paying for a certificate is a clearly worthwhile financial decision.

Why these work when most IT certificates do not
They are issued by the companies that own the platform. The exams are hard to pass without real ability. And employers already pay for the platform, so they care whether you know how to use it.

AWS (Amazon Web Services) — most widespread in Malaysia
Cloud Practitioner → Solutions Architect Associate → Solutions Architect Professional / DevOps Engineer Professional.

Microsoft Azure — strong in large companies, banks, government
AZ-900 Fundamentals → AZ-104 Administrator → AZ-305 Solutions Architect Expert.

Google Cloud — smaller in Malaysia, strong in data-heavy companies
Cloud Digital Leader → Associate Cloud Engineer → Professional Cloud Architect.

Specific advice
Pick one. Depth on one platform is worth far more than shallow knowledge of three.
Ask your employer to pay. Many will, particularly if they already use the platform. This is among the least-claimed benefits in IT.
Certificates alone are not enough. Build something on the free tier and be able to explain what broke.

Academic qualifications
An IT diploma or degree helps, but certificates carry more weight here than in any other IT career.

Cons

Future & the AI era

AI generates Terraform & auto-optimises costs — manual configuration shrinks.
Architecture, trade-offs & production accountability stay human. AI infra (GPU clusters) is the new premium skill.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — EnglishSPM
English is the real requirement — all cloud documentation, all certificate exams, and nearly all troubleshooting happen in English.
    Add Maths is not needed.
  2. IT diploma or degree — or rise from support2–4 tahun
Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering.
But the route most often taken in Malaysia is not that one. Plenty of cloud engineers start as an IT support technician or a network engineer, take cloud certificates while working, and move across.
That matters: this is a high-paying career genuinely reachable without a degree, because the cloud platforms test you directly.
  3. The certificate ladder — this sets your payKunci
Pick one platform and go deep. AWS is the most widespread in Malaysia; Azure is strong in large companies and government.
Cloud Practitioner / Fundamentals — the start, can be taken while still studying.
Associate (Solutions Architect, SysOps) — this is what gets you interviews.
Professional — this is what gets you a five-figure salary.
The common mistake: learning a little of all three platforms. An employer uses one, and wants someone who knows it in depth.
  4. Free tier — build something realPraktikal
AWS, Azure and Google Cloud all offer free tiers. You can build real infrastructure as a student without paying.
That matters because certificates alone are not enough. Interviews ask what you have built and what broke.
Watch the cost. Leaving resources running is the classic student mistake and can produce a startling bill — set spending alerts on day one.

Questions students actually ask

Are cloud certificates really worth paying for yourself?
Yes — and this is one of the few places in IT where the answer is clear.
Why these differ from most IT certificates: they are issued by the companies that own the platform, the exams are hard to pass without real ability, and employers already pay for the platform — so they care whether you can use it.
The arithmetic: exam fees are hundreds of ringgit each. Moving from no certificate to an Associate realistically means a few thousand ringgit a month more in salary. The payback period is measured in weeks.
But three conditions:
Pick one platform. AWS if unsure — the largest supply of jobs in Malaysia.
Ask your employer to pay first. Many will. It is among the least-claimed benefits in the industry.
Build something. Certificates without hands-on experience come apart in a technical interview. Use the free tier — and set spending alerts, because leaving resources running is the classic student mistake.
