Builds virtual and augmented reality experiences for industrial training, education and entertainment.

A day in the life

AR/VR developers build immersive experiences: industrial VR training, retail AR apps, virtual property tours, exhibition experiences.
A typical day: coding in Unity/Unreal, performance optimisation (VR must hit 90fps!), headset testing, 3D asset integration.
In Malaysia, mostly B2B projects: safety training, virtual showrooms, education.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: are excited by immersive tech, have solid 3D & programming basics, and accept a slowly growing niche market.
Less suitable if you: want a big, stable job market right now.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Junior: RM3,500–5,500.
AR/VR developer (3–5 years): RM6,500–12,000.
Senior: RM12,000–20,000.
Technical lead: RM18,000–30,000.
Corporate work pays more than entertainment work, consistently — because the clients have budgets and a measurable return.

Where the employment is
Oil and gas companies, manufacturers, property developers, hospitals and universities — either directly or through consulting studios.
Not mostly in consumer entertainment, which is the opposite of what most students expect.

An advantage that does not exist in most other careers
Software work can be done from anywhere. A developer in Malaysia working remotely for a Singapore or American company is paid in SGD or USD while paying rent in ringgit.
The difference is large — large enough that it changes the whole arithmetic of this career, and it does not exist for a doctor, a lawyer or a civil engineer, whose licences are tied to a country.
But it is conditional on two things, and both can be built starting from SPM:
English at a real working level — not merely a pass, but enough to argue about system design in a meeting.
Work you can show — GitHub, projects that run, real contributions. Companies hiring remotely cannot interview you the usual way, so they lean on what they can see.
Students who build both while studying end up in an entirely different salary market from classmates who only collected certificates.

What to understand about this market
It is smaller than general software, and it has been through cycles of excitement and disappointment more than once. Plan with that in mind.
Corporate use cases are steadier than consumer ones, because they deliver measurable savings rather than depending on someone wanting to wear a headset for fun.

What AI changes
Exposed: 3D asset generation, textures, basic animation, boilerplate. AI tools have made content production far cheaper.
Not exposed: designing interaction that does not make people nauseous, understanding how people move in space, and deciding what to simulate so the training actually transfers to the real job.
An effect that may favour this field: as content creation costs fall, building training simulations becomes worthwhile for more companies. That could expand the market rather than shrink it.

City vs hometown

KL for studios & corporate clients; factory-training projects in Penang/Johor.

Study path after SPM / UEC

Not in entertainment. That is the most important thing on this page.
Malaysian AR/VR employment sits in:
Training simulation — oil and gas, manufacturing, industrial safety. Training someone in VR is cheaper and safer than on a real plant.
Architectural visualisation — property developers showing buyers a building that does not exist yet.
Medical training — practising procedures without a patient.
Education — interactive content for schools and universities.
Companies pay for this because it saves them money. That is a steadier basis for demand than entertainment.

The route
SPM (Maths) → Computer Science / games degree → learn Unity or Unreal → build a portfolio → AR/VR studio or consultancy.

Why this page recommends Computer Science
AR/VR is a smaller market than general software. A Computer Science degree keeps working if you move into software engineering, games or mobile.
This is the same advice as for games, for the same reason: pursue the field wholeheartedly, but do not let one small market be your only option.

What sets your portfolio apart
Most students build a VR demo that is fun. Few build something that solves a business problem.
Build a training module. Pick a task that is dangerous or expensive to teach, and simulate it. That immediately shows you understand where this work comes from.

Related fields
Game designer — the same engines and skills. Software engineer — larger market, higher pay. Architect — architectural visualisation is a direct intersection. Animator and graphic designer for the visual side.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

Game/multimedia programmes at APU, MMU, KDU; dedicated XR courses are rare — self-teach.

Your own headset (Quest): RM1,500–RM2,500 — the main work tool.

Certification & licence

No licence. None at all.
Unlike a Civil Engineer (BEM), an Accountant (MIA) or a Doctor (MMC), no body in Malaysia licenses software work. No register, no protected title, nobody who can stop you working.
What that means in practice:
A portfolio beats a certificate. Employers check the code you wrote, not the paper you bought. This is genuinely different from licensed professions, where the paper <i>is</i> the permission to work.
Be wary of an "IT diploma" sold as a shortcut. In a field with no regulator, nobody validates what that certificate is worth — and employers know it.
Bootcamps can work, but not because of the certificate — because they force you to build something. If it does not produce showable projects, it produces nothing.

Academic qualifications
Computer Science, Game Design, or Multimedia.
Computer Science is recommended — it keeps working if you end up in a broader software career, and AR/VR is a smaller market.

Certificates
Unity issues developer certificates. They rarely decide a hire.
This work is judged on what can be tried — a demo an employer can run on a device.

What actually gets built
One engine, deeply. Unity (C#) for most AR/VR work; Unreal (C++) for high-quality architectural visualisation.
Blender — free, and enough to build your own 3D assets.
A portfolio that solves a business problem, not only a fun demo. A training module for a dangerous task shows you understand the market.
Hardware awareness — what runs on a phone versus a dedicated VR headset. Performance constraints are a large part of this work.

A responsibility rarely mentioned
If you build medical or industrial safety training, accuracy has consequences. A simulation that teaches the wrong procedure is worse than no simulation. Clients in that space will scrutinise your work, and should.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — Maths, Physics, EnglishSPM
    Maths matters more here than in most software work — 3D space, rotations, and position tracking are all geometry.
    Physics helps for simulation.
    English for tools and documentation.
  2. Degree — Computer Science is the safe choice3–4 tahun
    Computer Science, Game Design, or Multimedia.
    Computer Science is the safer choice because AR/VR is a smaller market, and the degree keeps working if you move into software engineering or games.
  3. Unity or Unreal, and 3D modellingKemahiran
    Unity (C#) — most widespread for AR/VR, particularly mobile.
    Unreal (C++) — higher visual quality, used in architectural visualisation.
    Blender — free, and enough for 3D assets.
    Pick one engine and go deep. The same advice as game design, and for the same reason.

    This is the most useful advice on this page.
    Students picture VR games. The Malaysian employment is training simulation for oil and gas companies, manufacturing safety training, medical procedure training, and virtual showrooms for property developers.
    That work is less exciting and considerably better paid, because companies have budgets and a clear business reason: training someone in VR is cheaper and safer than training them on real equipment.
    If you are building a portfolio, build something that solves a corporate problem.

Take Computer Science, not a dedicated AR/VR degree. The skills are the same, but you keep your options.
Learn Unity — it serves AR/VR, games, simulation and visualisation.
Build a portfolio that solves a corporate problem, not a fun demo.
Do that and you are not gambling. You are building skills useful across several markets, and pursuing the one you want.
