What does a Blockchain Developer do?

Builds decentralised apps and smart contracts — niche but highly paid for the skilled.

A day in the life

Blockchain developers write smart contracts & decentralised apps: Solidity/Rust, code security audits, wallet integration, DeFi protocols.
A typical day: writing & testing contracts (a bug = money gone forever!), audit reviews, Web3 frontends.
Most work is for global protocols — local companies are rare.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: are a solid developer obsessed with security & precision, can stomach crypto's swings, and self-learn from documentation.
Less suitable if you: want stability — this industry swings wildly.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Junior: RM5,000–9,000.
Blockchain developer (3–5 years): RM10,000–20,000.
Senior: RM18,000–35,000.
Smart contract auditor: often higher, because supply is very small.

Those numbers need context
They look attractive, and they are true in a good market.
But blockchain demand cycles with crypto prices. Posts are plentiful in a bull market and vanish in a bear one, and that has happened more than once.
That does not mean avoid the field. It means do not make it your only skill — build software engineering underneath it so you have a career when the cycle turns.

Where the steadier work is
Not in cryptocurrency. In supply chain tracking, document verification and institutional payment systems — use cases that solve a business problem rather than depending on an asset price.
Malaysian banks and logistics firms have explored these. That is a quieter and more durable basis for demand.

An advantage that does not exist in most other careers
Software work can be done from anywhere. A developer in Malaysia working remotely for a Singapore or American company is paid in SGD or USD while paying rent in ringgit.
The difference is large — large enough that it changes the whole arithmetic of this career, and it does not exist for a doctor, a lawyer or a civil engineer, whose licences are tied to a country.
But it is conditional on two things, and both can be built starting from SPM:
English at a real working level — not merely a pass, but enough to argue about system design in a meeting.
Work you can show — GitHub, projects that run, real contributions. Companies hiring remotely cannot interview you the usual way, so they lean on what they can see.
Students who build both while studying end up in an entirely different salary market from classmates who only collected certificates.

What AI changes
Exposed: writing standard smart contracts, boilerplate.
Not exposed, and rising in value: auditing contracts for flaws. Because the code cannot be patched after deployment, a mistake is permanent and expensive.
That makes security judgement the part which cannot be handed to a tool — and it is the best-paid skill in the field.
Concrete advice: if you pursue blockchain, lean toward security and auditing rather than writing contracts. That is where supply is smallest and the value is highest.

A student who builds a token and takes money from friends may think they are learning. They may be in licensed territory. That is not a hypothetical to wave away.

That means you should not make it your only skill.

The sensible route
SPM → a Computer Science degree (not a blockchain programme) → software engineer for 2–3 years → add Solidity and blockchain skills → blockchain developer.

Why that order, rather than going straight in
Smart contracts cannot be patched. Once deployed, the code stays as written, and a bug means money is permanently gone.
The standard for care is higher than in ordinary software, and that cannot be built in a few months.
Software engineering first also means you have a career when the cycle turns down — and it will.

Where the serious use cases are
Less in cryptocurrency, more in supply chain tracking, document verification and payment systems for institutions.
That work is steadier because it solves a real business problem rather than depending on an asset price.

Related fields
Software engineer — the foundation, and the recommended way in. Cybersecurity — smart contract auditing is a valuable specialisation. Fintech analyst — the regulated financial side. Compliance officer — this field needs people who understand both the technology and the rules.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

No meaningful dedicated programmes — CS basics + online resources (official docs, CryptoZombies).

Tuition fees

Nearly free once you have dev basics.

Scholarships

Ecosystem grants (Ethereum Foundation etc.) fund good open-source projects.

Certification & licence

No licence to be a developer — but what you build may be regulated
This is an important distinction, and it is rarely explained to students.
Writing blockchain code requires no permission. But offering a token that functions like an investment, handling other people's money, or running a trading platform can put you in licensed territory.

The relevant Malaysian authorities
Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) — regulates certain digital assets as securities, and licenses platform operators. Check their current position before building anything touching investment.
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) — has made clear that cryptocurrency is not legal tender in Malaysia, and regulates payment services.
PDPA 2010 — blockchain systems holding personal data raise a hard problem, because data on a chain may not be deletable. That conflicts with rights under data protection law, and it is a real issue in system design.

Academic qualifications
A Computer Science degree. Not a "blockchain degree" — the market is too small and too cyclical to specialise before you have foundations.

Be careful with certificates
There are many paid blockchain certificates marketed to students. Employers rarely check them.
What genuinely works: smart contracts you wrote, deployed on a testnet, with code others can read and audit.

The most valuable skill in this field
Security auditing. Because smart contracts cannot be patched, finding flaws before deployment is the best-paid skill in blockchain — and it overlaps with cybersecurity.

  1. SPM — Maths, EnglishSPM
    Maths is useful — cryptography is mathematically based.
    English for documentation and the international community.
  2. Computer Science degree — not a "blockchain course"3–4 tahun
    Specific advice: take Computer Science, not a dedicated blockchain programme.
    The reason: the blockchain market is small and cyclical, and a Computer Science degree keeps working when the cycle turns down.
    Be wary of paid blockchain courses marketed to students. There are many, and most sell market excitement rather than durable skill.
  3. Be a software engineer firstAsas
    Smart contracts are written in Solidity, but a mistake in a smart contract cannot be patched like an ordinary bug — the code cannot be changed once deployed, and money can be lost.
    That means the standard for care is higher than in ordinary software development, and someone who has just learned to program should not be writing contracts that hold other people's money.
    Build software engineering foundations first.

Is blockchain still worth learning?
