Short answerA cloud security engineer secures the infrastructure companies run on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud — who can reach what, how data is encrypted, and how intrusions are detected.
This is a combination of two skills rarely held by the same person, which is why it is among the best-paid IT posts in Malaysia: cloud engineering plus security.
No licence, but the certificate path here is among the clearest and most worthwhile in all of IT.
Why demand is rising: Malaysian companies are moving to the cloud, and cloud misconfiguration is one of the most common causes of data breaches.

What does a Cloud Security Engineer do?

Protects company data and systems in the cloud — combining two of the hottest fields: cloud and security.

A day in the life

Cloud security engineers protect AWS/Azure/GCP infrastructure: IAM configuration, security-as-code policies, monitoring misconfigurations, cloud incident response.
A typical day: auditing environments, automating guardrails (Terraform), triaging alerts, working with DevOps.
One open S3 bucket = millions of leaked records — that's what you prevent.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you: already know cloud OR security and want the premium of both, and prefer automation over manual work.
Less suitable if you: are brand new to IT — this is a second-stage skill.

Salary & career ladder

Salary range
Cloud security engineer (entering with experience): RM8,000–13,000.
Mid: RM13,000–20,000.
Senior: RM20,000–32,000.
Cloud security architect: RM30,000–50,000.
This is among the best-paid IT work in Malaysia.

Why supply is so small
It needs two specialisms. Plenty of people have one; few have both.
And unlike most IT work, you cannot short-cut it — you need real cloud experience before the security work makes sense.

An advantage that does not exist in most other careers
Software work can be done from anywhere. A developer in Malaysia working remotely for a Singapore or American company is paid in SGD or USD while paying rent in ringgit.
The difference is large — large enough that it changes the whole arithmetic of this career, and it does not exist for a doctor, a lawyer or a civil engineer, whose licences are tied to a country.
But it is conditional on two things, and both can be built starting from SPM:
English at a real working level — not merely a pass, but enough to argue about system design in a meeting.
Work you can show — GitHub, projects that run, real contributions. Companies hiring remotely cannot interview you the usual way, so they lean on what they can see.
Students who build both while studying end up in an entirely different salary market from classmates who only collected certificates.

What AI changes
Exposed: configuration scanning, routine compliance checks, alert triage.
Not exposed: designing architecture that is secure by default, trading security against usability, and deciding which risks are acceptable.
Running the other way, and strongly: every AI workload runs on cloud infrastructure, and every new AI system is a new attack surface. More cloud means more cloud security.
The Malaysian context: companies are moving to the cloud now, and most without in-house security expertise. That is the gap, and it is where this work comes from.

City vs hometown

KL & remote — cloud work doesn't care where you sit.
Malaysia's data-centre boom (Johor!) adds local demand.

Study path after SPM / UEC

IT degree + AWS/Azure security certsWhy this post pays so well
It needs two skills rarely held by the same person.
Security people often do not understand the cloud deeply. Cloud people often do not think like an attacker.
Someone who can do both is in very short supply, and companies pay for it.

The route
SPM → IT degree / diploma <i>or</i> IT support → Associate cloud certificate → 2 years as a cloud engineer → cloud security certificate → cloud security engineer.

Why it is not an entry-level post
You cannot secure something you do not know how to build. Someone who has learned a list of security controls without ever running infrastructure will produce policies that break production.
That middle step is not a delay — it is what makes you useful.

The problem you will be hired to solve
Misconfiguration. Most cloud breaches are not sophisticated hacking — they are a storage bucket left open, an access key committed into code, or permissions that are too broad.
That means your work is largely prevention rather than response. It differs from security analysis, where you largely respond.

The Malaysian context
Companies are moving to the cloud, and the PDPA 2010 imposes duties about how personal data is held. Banks and telcos have additional regulatory requirements, and they pay the most.

Related fields
Cloud engineer — the most common way in. Cybersecurity analyst — the other way in. DevOps — DevSecOps is all three combined. Penetration tester — understanding attack makes you better at defence.
If you are taking the UEC instead of SPM
Everything above still applies to you — the subjects are the same disciplines, only a different exam paper. What changes is the route after it.
The UEC is not accepted for direct entry into a Malaysian public university degree. That is why independent school students overwhelmingly go to private universities in Malaysia, or abroad.
The UEC is treated as equivalent to STPM and A-Level, and it is recognised in the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and Taiwan — which is why the overseas rate from independent schools is so high.
And the part that costs families real money — read this one properly:
PTPTN eligibility runs through SPM, and a UEC alone does not carry it. To keep the loan available you need a complete SPM, which means two things people get wrong:
Sejarah must be passed. Since SPM 2013 a pass in Sejarah (minimum E) is compulsory for the certificate itself — fail it and you do not have a complete SPM at all.
Bahasa Melayu is usually required at credit (grade C), not merely a pass.
The institution and programme must also be PTPTN-recognised — check that on the PTPTN gateway before you commit to a college.
The UEC route pushes you towards a private degree, and PTPTN is what pays for it. If you have not sat SPM, sit it — and do not treat Sejarah as the throwaway paper.
These conditions change. Verify the current rules with PTPTN before relying on any of this.

Universities

Any IT base (APU/MMU/UTM…); the specialisation comes from cloud certs + experience.

Tuition fees

Cloud security certs: USD300–400 each — small investment, big returns.

Scholarships

Employers usually fund certs; AWS/Microsoft community programmes offer vouchers.

Certification & licence

No licence. None at all.
Unlike a Civil Engineer (BEM), an Accountant (MIA) or a Doctor (MMC), no body in Malaysia licenses software work. No register, no protected title, nobody who can stop you working.
What that means in practice:
A portfolio beats a certificate. Employers check the code you wrote, not the paper you bought. This is genuinely different from licensed professions, where the paper <i>is</i> the permission to work.
Be wary of an "IT diploma" sold as a shortcut. In a field with no regulator, nobody validates what that certificate is worth — and employers know it.
Bootcamps can work, but not because of the certificate — because they force you to build something. If it does not produce showable projects, it produces nothing.

But the certificate path here is among the clearest in IT
As with cloud engineering, certificates genuinely work here — because they verify skill on a specific platform, and because security access demands trust that can be verified.

The order
1. CompTIA Security+ — security foundations.
2. An Associate cloud certificate — AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Azure AZ-104. You need the cloud foundation first.
3. AWS Certified Security – Specialty or Microsoft AZ-500 — these move salary directly.
4. CCSP (ISC²) — senior level. Requires verified work experience, like the CISSP.

Legal duty
The PDPA 2010 imposes duties about how personal data is held and who may reach it. In cloud work that means architecture decisions — where data sits, who holds the keys — have legal consequences, not only technical ones.
NACSA sets national cyber security guidance.

Academic qualifications
An IT degree helps but is not required. Certificates plus real cloud experience carry more weight — and that makes this well-paid career reachable through the IT support route.

Pros

Cons

Future & the AI era

AI reviews configs & generates policies — manual auditing shrinks.
Security architecture, risk decisions & incident response stay human. AI security (protecting AI systems) is the next niche.

Step by step, and how long each takes

  1. SPM — EnglishSPM
The same as the other cloud and security routes. Add Maths is not needed.
  2. Degree / diploma — or the support route2–4 tahun
    Cybersecurity, Computer Science, IT.
Or the more common route: IT supportcloud engineer → cloud security. Every step is paid, and every step is bridged by a certificate.
  3. Cloud first, security secondUrutan
This is not an entry-level post.
You cannot secure infrastructure you do not know how to build. Almost everyone arrives here from cloud engineering or security analysis.
The order that most often works: get an Associate cloud certificate first, work as a cloud engineer for two years, then add the security certificate.
  4. AWS Security Specialty / Azure Security EngineerSijil
AWS Certified Security – Specialty and Microsoft AZ-500 Azure Security Engineer are the two certificates that most directly move salary in this field.
Then CCSP (ISC²) for senior level — it requires verified work experience, like the CISSP.

Questions students actually ask

Should I learn cloud first or security first?
Cloud first, and the reason is practical.
You cannot secure infrastructure you do not know how to build. Someone who has learned a list of security controls without ever running a production system will write policies that look right on paper and break real systems.
The order that works:
1. CompTIA Security+ while studying — cheap, gives you the vocabulary.
2. An Associate cloud certificate (AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Azure AZ-104).
3. Work as a cloud engineer for roughly two years. This is the step that cannot be skipped — it teaches you how real systems are configured and how they fail.
4. AWS Security Specialty or Azure AZ-500.
5. Move into cloud security.
The good news: every step is paid, and every step raises your salary. You are not waiting until the end for the reward.
